Hi guys,

I've been looking for a new detector and found a deal on an Explorer XS. I'm really excited about this machine and I'm looking for any info or links to try to get a head start before it arrives. Any tips are appreciated!

that it is giving you. You will most likely be overwhelmed with all the sounds so what you should do is try swinging some Coins and Jewelry across the Search Coil to see where they register and what kinds of Sounds to look for. You could also try to start to dig a lot of different sounding Targets and then you will start getting the hang of this great machine, possibly in your own yard until you get the hang of the detector and what you are doing. I would stay in Quickstart for now since you will be new to the machine. After awhile, it should get easier for you and then maybe you can mess around with different settings in Advanced Mode. If you have any other questions feel free to PM (Private Message) me since I know the Explorer XS very well and will get you pointed in the right direction in making some great finds. I agree. welcome to the forum, looking forward to posts of your finds. There are a great bunch of people here to help, they sure did me. just look at all of their posts. They find the good stuff, and so will you.
 
Thanks for the welcome and advice! I didn't think I could afford an Explorer so I was very excited when I found this one. I realize it will be quite some time before I really understand the machine, but I'm looking forward to learning. I've been reading the manual I downloaded from Minelab and I'm amazed at how advanced it seems compared to some others. James N.D., I believe I will start digging up some of your old posts to see what I can glean from them. Anyways I appreciate the support and look forward to posting here often! (with pictures of SILVER) LOL

that there is plenty of others on here that will help you out, not only me since everyone on here wants to see everyone that comes here start making great finds with their machine. That's what this forum is all about, learning from each other and posting their finds from the knowledge they have learned either from long hours of trial and error or by the advice given by everyone on this site. Take your time with the xs. I have a buddy who hunts with the xs and does very well. It's all about learning the machine and taking it one step at a time. If you go out using somebody's magic settings and expecting to find 10+ silver and 50+ wheaties every time you hunt...you will soon be disappointed and get discouraged.
No settings will make up for actual in field experience....and taking things slow will help you soak in the info learned a lot better.

My buddy niterider_58 would be glad to help you out and he knows his xs like the back of his hand. There are also many others here who can really help you out with tips and settings once you've familiarized yourself with the machine. PM anytime you need to as well.

Welcome to the world of Minelab and you will get very good advice from the guys on this forum. Take your time and most importantly learn what the different sounds are telling you. Good luck and looking forward to your first finds to post on the forum for us to see. HH.

Thanks to all for the welcome!:beers: I really appreciate all the good info and advice too. I've been reading through the online manual just trying to familiarize myself with the menus and features. The gent I bought it from sent me some cool links too, one of which show the areas that common coins and jewelry normally hit. The discrimination setup just seems awesome, I had no idea it was 2 dimensional but that seems much better than anything I've seen.I dont plan on changing any settings for a good while untill I am really familiar with it and will run on the quickstart factory map as suggested. It will probably be perfect for the coinshooting I mostly do anyway it seems. I'l probably set up some coins I have in the yard just to play with it to see how they hit. Anyway until it gets here (probably next week) I'm reading up on it and I also found some good potential hunting sites that I'm excited about! I'm going to wait until I have the Minelab before I go hunt them though.:detecting:

I bet your like a little kid the day before christmas, all excited until that big moment arrives where you get to open up your present. You should be excited! Sounds like you may hit some goodies right from the get go and hope you do. Until then, read up on the manual and be prepared for that big moment when you present arrives. you are able to find some good spots. Even if they've been hit before...you will probably pop out some walked over goodies.
All the research in the world probably won't yield sites that give up 75 to 100 keepers per hunt each and every weekend:cool:. Sure research is the most valuable weapon in helping us uncover great sites...but you just shouldn't expect to hit a super productive site 20 weekends in a row....or you can get discouraged easily. One of the biggest problems that new explorer users encounter is expecting too much too fast...or seeing others finding loads of stuff...which many do...then getting discouraged when they don't make the same type of finds. There are still good sites out there that will give up a lot of good coins though....and who knows...maybe you'll get lucky enough to stumble upon a virgin site:thumbup: That is a dream of all of ours.:thumbup: :clapping:

It's good that you are excited...and your new minelab will KEEP you that way:clapping:
