New to E-Trac: Constant readings and signals, problem?

Mapleton

I just got the E-Trac and I took it to an old and well trafficked park looking for coins. I had it in the standard Coin mode, Recovery Deep, Recovery Fast, Difficult for landscape, and trash as High.

Basically, its saying there is a signal like every foot, in every direction. The thing basically never stops ringing with seemingly random all over the board Fe-CO numbers,

Granted, I understand you have to listen to the sound, because the sounds are more important than the numbers. Most of the sounds are quite iffy and on-off. I assume that this means they're not to great finds and I shouldn't dig them.

I watched the YouTube videos on the E-Trac and I know about what a silver or whatever will sound like, I'm not getting too many of these. It's mostly short beeps but everywhere. Is this normal? AM I just hunting a trash heap with too many falses? Or do I just need to be waiting for the solid signals. The "werrrpp weerrrrpp" (so I'm told) of a silver and the consistent Fe-Co numbers?

However on my first day I did manage to find a memorial penny and a rusty old nail in about an hour. (about 10 minutes spent detecting, the rest digging, I realize now I need a pinpointer and a better/bigger shovel).

Yes that is quite normal. You've really got to slow down and isolate each sound. If you change Recovery deep to OFF and recovery Fast OFF you'll get a more accurate ID on your targets. You can turn those back on after you get more familiar with the E-Trac.

When I swing the E-Trac in out city park I get many sounds on every swing as well. If I slow waaaay down I find each sound is a target. minimize your swing once you get a sound to just that tone and it will makidentificationon easy.

are you in auto sensitivity you will know this as when you switch it on there should be a circle rotating at the top you do need to be in auto and if it seems too sensitive use the four directional cursors bottome left the left and right will move you in and out of manual sensitivity and i think you may have touched this by mistake as i did once and the top and bottom arrows will increase and decrease your sensitivity these arrows are an ideal way to change your sensitivity when on the move so if its seeming abit unstable turn it down a fraction any more queries just shoot we are here to help happy hunting

Your asking too much too soon! It will someday just "click", but not today. You should go to a relatively clean area first. That way you can just find targets and hear the tone of coins etc and get use to it. You could also just go in the back yard and throw some coins out...not as fun but effective in learning Minelabs are a different "animal" is some ways.....so you have to "hunt" in a different way. Your brain is probably on "overload" and needs time to adjust to the etrac. You should also make sure your detector is in factory settings or ...master reset it. .

Good luck to you!

I also would like to know what your sensitivity is on (Auto or Manual)??? It can be a little overwhelming to begin with. If you haven't done so, make yourself a coin garden. At least get a wheat, IH, dime and nickel in clean ground at 6-7" and listen. Also listen to a penny on top of the ground. You'll soon get the hang of it. Your correct about the pinpointer. A good one takes A LOT of frustration out.

There is probably a lot of buried iron along with years of trash that will be giving you lots of errant sounds. Slow down and listen for repeatable tones. Some parks are real monsters to hunt while others are much easier. Got to be patient but the good finds will come.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm going to check and see if I have it on Auto or Manual, I honestly was not aware of this feature.

ok well as i said in my previous post turn etrac on and check the left hand side if there is a rotating circle at the top this is great for you and if no circle click left or right cursor on the lefthand side and that will put you into auto we have all done it had the etrac singing like a canary on crack so if you need to be taken slowly through ANY SETTINGS just ask and we will try and help

I did the suggested things today at my work, which was a moderately trashy area and it did ring a lot less and the signals were more consistent.

Also, apparently I had it on manual. So I turned it to automatic.

The machine works a lot better now. I'll take it back to the spot I had it this week and see the difference.

I'm also going to get a bigger shovel and a mosquito net hat!

well done yes manual is for the hardy guys and certainly not us starting out i flip to it if i get a faint signal using it like a microscope to see into the ground so to speak so for me it does have its uses it can easily get switched on as you are hitting buttons so just keep checking for that all important circle if it does chatter wind it down a bit using the cursors at the bottom left of cause the down button will send your automatic sensitivity down until it stops chattering do hope you get to dig some good coins if you are in a trashy area you could do with getting into two tone ferrous which works well as you dig all high tones and leave all grunts if you need to know more i will take you through it but see how you get on happy hunting
