... for my new SE.

The Explorer XS is still one of my favorite detectors. It still finds things as well as it ever did. An annoying problem with it has always been the shaft keeps slipping out of the housing no matter what I try. I've mastered pinpointing with it, but I welcome the improvement there.

I have had a DFX in my arsenal since when it was first released. Shortly after that I got the XS. I've since added the CZ-3D, TM-808, 1236-XS (competition hunts), and the Nautilus 2Ba.

Still, the 1st thing I reach for is the XS. After I go over the ground with that, I use the 3D. It (3D) does well to pick up old coins that all my other detectors may ID as pull-tabs or foil. Finally I'll go back over it one more time with the Nautilus using the 15" coil for the really deep stuff. I use the DFX in the mix too, but not in the methodical order of the others.

In the meantime, I've poured over the post the last few months about the new SE and whether to upgrade or not. I even posted here a couple of months ago when I was having to choose between the SE and the Nautilus and some of you gave some very good insights into the SE. I got the Nautilus then and that seems to be working out. But I still had to ponder what I was missing with the new SE. So I have finally decided to get one and next week I'll have it.

I now look forward to not having the shaft slip. I never knew how much that bothered me until I finally had a solution in sight. I also look forward to the pinpoint feature and the faster processor. Someone mentioned on here that the new one didn't lose the target once the dirt was removed. I think I've had times when I might have benefited from that also.

Another thing that I have often pondered is whether my XS ever got the same depth as others that post on here. It gets generally as good as my DFX, but I think my 3D goes a little deeper. The Nautilus goes much deeper. I'm not saying they are better, but they get a little better depth than my copy of the XS.

I have worked with it and tried different settings and it still gets respectable depth, but typically 6-7 inches is all I get on coins. It IDs great! But I think this unit just may have been just a little weak compared to other XS's. Even so I'm still excited about getting another Explorer. If it still doesn't get more depth, there would be only mild disappointment, and I would still be excited to have it.

So next week I look forward to joining the family of SE owners.

When I bought my used XS, the last owner had a small screw holding the upper shaft to the housing. The cam lock works, it's just that he had a little slop while swinging and he had someone tap a hole and found a screw to fit, so it's solid as a rock. It seems you should be getting better depth with your machine. I have dug coin size buttons at 10 - 11" no problem using Iron Mask at 15. The XS gets better depth than my DFX, but the DFX is better on cellar holes because of the quicker recovery speed. Looks like you have all the bases covered with your arsenal. Ron

I had trouble with my XS upper shaft slipping out too. I carefully wraped one thickness of clear shipping tape around the part that goes into the housing. Snugged it right up and never slipped again. That was before I had the XS repaired and they put on an EII type housing.

6-7 inches on coins...Go back a week or so & see the thread on running sensetivity in semi auto...now in some spots, it seems to work ok but they are fairly trashless. What I'm finding is that in a trash filled area the Exp. (SE) tries to run stable (detune) when there are too many signals. I can't say I'll NEVER run in semi-auto again, but I do know there will be far fewer times when I do...TT

...It doesn't matter anymore!

I'm sitting here now looking at my new SE. I'll soon know if there is a difference or not.

I bought the headset Uniprobe to go with it, so I'm now I'm dying for Monday to get here to go out a test everything out.

Just brought it home and have the batteries charging. Took it out with alkalines for a few minutes in my yard and I like it.

Bought a Headset Uniprobe also. I'm was hesitant about the depth claims, but it does real well.

So I can't wait to get out with that next week and see how that combination works out.

I'm new to the Explorer (SE) & think it is an awsome machine...I've only had mine for about three months & LOVE it...it takes a little getting used to, at least for me...& every time I manage to get out I'm learning a new trick or two to get more out of it...I'd bet money you're gonna love it...Especially already being familiar with the various tones & readouts...HH...TT

I went out for about 1 hour yesterday and this one definately goes deeper. The second target I dug was 1934 Merc down about 8 inches. 2 targets were so deep that I finally gave up on them.

I like the other improvements as well, especially pinpointing. It is just after 5 am here and I'll have to wait until noon to get out today. So I'm hoping to learn a little bit more. I'm also going to try the Minlab 8" coil that came with the deal. I had a Sunray (still have) 8 on the XS that liked quite well.

I got my SE Saturday and after about 3 hours of hunting, I have 3 mercury dimes, 10 wheats, 2 clad dimes and very little trash. This is all from a site that I had pounded with my old XS, CZ3d, DFX, and Nautilus.

The deepest dime was 8" and one wheat was down 9". There is a very distinct difference in depth over my XS. There is also a renewed confidence in my detecting as I was hoping it wasn't me not getting the depth out.

Thanks for everyone's input. Problem solved.
