... for my new SE.
The Explorer XS is still one of my favorite detectors. It still finds things as well as it ever did. An annoying problem with it has always been the shaft keeps slipping out of the housing no matter what I try. I've mastered pinpointing with it, but I welcome the improvement there.
I have had a DFX in my arsenal since when it was first released. Shortly after that I got the XS. I've since added the CZ-3D, TM-808, 1236-XS (competition hunts), and the Nautilus 2Ba.
Still, the 1st thing I reach for is the XS. After I go over the ground with that, I use the 3D. It (3D) does well to pick up old coins that all my other detectors may ID as pull-tabs or foil. Finally I'll go back over it one more time with the Nautilus using the 15" coil for the really deep stuff. I use the DFX in the mix too, but not in the methodical order of the others.
In the meantime, I've poured over the post the last few months about the new SE and whether to upgrade or not. I even posted here a couple of months ago when I was having to choose between the SE and the Nautilus and some of you gave some very good insights into the SE. I got the Nautilus then and that seems to be working out. But I still had to ponder what I was missing with the new SE. So I have finally decided to get one and next week I'll have it.
I now look forward to not having the shaft slip. I never knew how much that bothered me until I finally had a solution in sight. I also look forward to the pinpoint feature and the faster processor. Someone mentioned on here that the new one didn't lose the target once the dirt was removed. I think I've had times when I might have benefited from that also.
Another thing that I have often pondered is whether my XS ever got the same depth as others that post on here. It gets generally as good as my DFX, but I think my 3D goes a little deeper. The Nautilus goes much deeper. I'm not saying they are better, but they get a little better depth than my copy of the XS.
I have worked with it and tried different settings and it still gets respectable depth, but typically 6-7 inches is all I get on coins. It IDs great! But I think this unit just may have been just a little weak compared to other XS's. Even so I'm still excited about getting another Explorer. If it still doesn't get more depth, there would be only mild disappointment, and I would still be excited to have it.
So next week I look forward to joining the family of SE owners.
