Nice First Hunt At a New Site and an Archaic Period Artifact

Had a good early Saturday morning hunt. Still testing out a few homesite locations from the maps I am building of my area.

Site proved to have some older items with some early teens stuff sprinkled over top, all confirming my research. Having worked the site and becoming more familiar with it I suspect return hunts will produce some more early pieces.

A few round pistol balls and an interesting brass piece lead the way for the early finds. The brass piece has excellent patina and has resemblances to or could possibly be a sword hanger? I’m hopeful for opinions on this piece.

The lead round piece is marked E I DuPont & Co. I am unsure what the piece is but do know the stamping ties it to the very early company of DuPont, the same we know today. They were involved in various products including explosives during the time frame of this site.

A few other finds included a nice brass suspender clip with an early patent date and several 1890s era buttons, including a ball button with a busted out shank.
A roasted Indian Head cent popped up late in the hunt.

Two more Brody Des Moines buttons. The weekend prior I found one at a site across the section about a mile. This tells me that the local general store must have stocked this brand of clothing. Pretty interesting.

Find of the day however was this Archaic period Hardin style hafted scraper. A blind squirrel could have tripped over this one. As you see it in the picture is exactly how I discovered it.
I sent photos to a very well established friend in the Native Artifact community and he identified it right away. I confirmed with my research as well.
It dates anywhere from 10,500 years to 3,000 years BCE.
It was likely originally from a spear point or knife blade but after being broken was repurposed into a hafted hide scraper. My friend is very interested in examining the site as he suspects there may be a campsite very near by. Definitely one of my oldest finds.
For me it is simply wild to think that people (Native American’s ancestors) from the end of the Megafauna period were possibly camped right there and all the things that have to line up for me to find this piece thousands of years later.

Thanks for looking and happy hunting!
