Nice way to start the detecting year - 1878-CC 25c

Internet is out at home for now so I'm posting this quick from work before I head home.

Tried to get out detecting on Wed. night but then it snowed before I could get off work. Tried last night and it started raining--at 33 degrees. Said hell with it and detected anyhow. Dug a clad quarter and found the ground frozen about 2-3" down but it seemed soft under that. Then dug what might be a smashed bullet a bit deeper a bit further off and found that the ground there was still frozen deeper yet. Moved off to try another area and got a pretty sweet signal that was mainly around 00-29 but occasionally bounced into the copper cent area. Was expecting (hoping) a Washington quarter but was pleasantly surprised. D***, that ground was hard. And it shows with the  gouge on the reverse. (The smaller gouge above the liberty cap is old.) Since I hit a Seated dime--also Carson City mint but 1876--before a Barber dime, I guess i'm now due for my first Barber quarter. I ain't arguin' at all. While trying to grade it I started thinking that perhaps it was a weak strike since it didn't make sense for such details in some areas and some to appear so worn--particularly the lower left on the reverse. With some quick googling this morning, I saw a number of other coins online with that year and mint that had the same pattern of weakness in the same area.

My fiance's daughter had her first child at 1:05 yesterday morning so there were some bright spots in the day. :D

I would say that is a nice find. Sweet signals are mostly a thing of the past so I hope you didn't have any problems bending down to dig-lol. How deep down was that beauty?

nice coin. Thanks for the post & pic

Great find Rich! I was wondering how you and that SE was getting along. Good to see your posts, always enjoyed seeing what you pulled out of the dirt.

Hey Rich..how you doin bro..What a great find!! . Im still waiting for my first seated coin!! Too bad you cant make the spring hunt..But congrats on your future grand daughter..I think..lol..and good luck to you my friend..Chris

[At work again so have net access.]

Thanks, folks.

Kirk, it wasn't that deep, which is why I was expecting a Washington 25c. Maybe 5-6" give or take. (Dirt mostly came out in large chunks and the coin was in the spill pile after I pulled the biggest chunk out. (After working at it for 10m or so.)

We have ice/snow on the ground again and the temps have been low so it looks like I have to wait a while again. :( I'm jonesin'.
