Nickel Grand Slam

I got out today for the first time in a month or so. I hit a pasture that used to be a fairground years ago. Things were real slow for the first hour or two. Just a couple of Jefferson nickels and a wheatie. All of a sudden things picked up and in the next 30 minutes or so i found a few nice old coins. Total coin tally for the day was only 8. Not very good, but for me what they were made up for the small count. I ended up with 1 wheatie a 1916?, 5 nickels - an undated Shield nickel, a 1891 Liberty, a 1936 D Buffalo (all four legs), and a 1960 and 1990 Jefferson, my other two coins were dimes: a 1909 Barber and the last but best coin of the day was a very nice 1891 Seated dime. The grand slam on the nickels was the first time I found all four styles in the same day. I had found all four styles in September, but it was over the entire month. A cold wet and windy day, but the Slam and those other old coins made it a very pleasing day.

Wow, what a great day you had. I am curious about the #s you got on those nickels. If you can recall, post them for us. If you could give us the # and the depth, that would be great. Thanks, Dan

I can't believe you mentioned the seated dime like a footnote. Those silver finds trumps all the ugly, gnarly, worthless nickels!

Yes Jason, I know that seated dime is by far the best coin of that bunch, one of the best coins I've found. I didn't indend to slight my seated find, but just finding all 4 styles of US 5 cent pieces the same day was a nice surprise for me also. Thanks to all for viewing and the comments. Everyone have a good Thanksgiving!

Heres a question..... did they all respond with the same numbers?

The numbers were initially the same on all the nickels a 12/12-14. But once the ground was broken, and using the SunRay probe, the numbers were a very solid 12/13. They were all in the 3-5 inch range in depth. In my area of Missouri, nickels all seem to read in the range mentioned above. I do dig beaver tails on occasion, and in the location where these coins were found, old shotgun brass was abundant, but usually read 12/09-11, occasionally 11/11-12. Hope that may help if anyone is interested some nickel numbers.

Really great finds. What a day you had. Congratulations!
