Nickels

When using conductive sounds nickels sound off like a horn and to me is very noticeable - stops me in my tracks - I dig lots of nickels. I haven't tried it yet, but those of you that use ferrous, do you dig a lot of nickels or are they just one of the many sounds that the Explorer produces? Can the sound of nickels in ferrous be easily learned? (thinking of going IM -16 and the previous thread got me thinking about this)

I use an Explorer XS and I don't dig many nickels at all. Most tones in the nickel range for me end up being rusted bottle caps. Unless they are deeper targets I seldom dig the nickel tones. I have not tried running in ferrous tones for nickels. I think if I had the Ex II I would have better success, because you have that added ferrous number associated with the conductivity number.

I also use the XS and I have dug nickels reading 4-5-or 6, and of course those are conductivity digital #'s...I am curious now what a ferrous # for nickels would be??? Anybody want to share?...I always run open screen and ferrous sounds and will get a target and check digital #'s before digging just to educate myself...and usually the Beaver tails fron pull tabs will be same #'s...so they will fool me...but usually you can tell just how perfect the coin sound is....unless it is an old Buffalo or older with lots of crud on it...then it can be scratchy.I have had nickels show up on screen at the beach....curser looking like crown cap or way left in ferrous ville but same height on screen....nickels are weird...but at beach my theory is if there is a nice nickel or quarter line going on keep following it cause gold is not far away...:minelab:

If you get into a lot of Trash or Iron with the Explorer 2, the Ferrous Reading will be thrown off quite a bit. When Randy had purchased his Explorer 2, we went to Island Park in Fargo and compared the Signals and Readings on Coins that I would get with my Explorer XS and I found 2 Targets that he could get but the Ferrous Content was 15 and he thought that these 2 Targets were a Nail or some other piece of Iron Trash. He sure didn't like it when I pulled an old Canadian Dime dated 1907 and an Indian Head Penny. It wasn't long after that he sold his Explorer 2 and bought back another Explorer XS. The Tone of the Nickel is what you have to try and learn to be some what successful. I myself haven't mastered Nickels yet and I do dig quite a few Bottle Caps and Pull tabs/Beaver Tails. But in time they will eventually start to click. Good Luck and HH Mike and I will see you at the Hunt next weekend.

James,

Every now and then after digging umpteen bottle caps and beaver tails I do get lucky and get a nickel. Got my first V- Nickel last weekend so I was excited about that. Thanks for the reply and see you next weekend at the hunt! HH!!

What did it come up as??? You don't have to tell me the Date either, just keep me in suspense until the Meeting. Is this your Very 1st V-Nickel or the 1st for the Year? Hope you have been finding a few goodies and Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

I wrote a small article last month on nickels with the SE...

All I know my nickel count is WAY up over previous years. I'm using SunRay 8" and 5", AM, Ferrous tones and SmartFind. I noticed right off the bat, I was having a hard time with Digital, and the SmartFind cursor just makes sense to me, and it seems pretty easy to target the nickels.

One piece of junk that tends to fool me is a folded beaver tail (no ring, just the tail). I get the same flutey nickel tone, and I always think it's going to be a Buffalo or War Nickel at pull tab depth. Other than that, regular (straight) pull tabs and modern pop tops seem easily identifiable, except some of the War Nickels will hit close to that mark with the silver content.
