No nickels!

So right now for lack of having a better place to hunt, I have been hunting National forest camp grounds(its legal I checked with the forest rangers). I have found a couple rings, lots of clad, and a few other items. But in all that clad I haven't found a single nickel and I dont know why. Any one have any Ideas as to why this might be happening?

Well, maybe there are no nickels. I don't get a lot of nickels, however they are in the pull tab range and maybe you are skipping over them. 12-13 is where I pick them up and if I get a solid signal around that number, I dig it. (I have picked up a couple Buffalo's but don't remember the number off hand) I have a habit of digging solid signals regardless of the number, unless I pick the coil up off the ground and it still picks up the target (9 times out of ten it is a crushed can) I hunt by sound and really study the signal, then I check the numbers and dig. Anyway, take a nickel with you and throw it on the ground to listen to the signal.

I've never found that many either. I got a V nickle the other night it was a solid 12/12

I don't get that many nickels either. I get more shot gun sheels than nickels. The nickels I've dug with the E-trac are in the 12/12,14 range mostly.

I've gotten quite a few. How mineralized is your soil. Our soil is really pretty good, but I was near a house that'd burned down and been rebuilt. I pulled a Buff. from around 6". My sens. had dropped to around 18-19 and I was getting readings like 24-15, 17-16 and dug out of "tone" curiosity. This really isn't the first time I dug out of curiosity and ended up with a Buff. V's and Jeff's seemed to hold a little more true to what they're supposed to.

I have found quite a few clad nickels, and a couple of buffs, even in the middle of the woods (strange!).

They try and fool you and act like shotgun casings, so make sure you don't pass up any solid targets in the "good" range.

Or like another poster said, perhaps there are no nickels there.

I've never found so many nickels till I got the etrac..I went up on nickel finds atleast 5-1 from my mxt.
Most (if deep) are faint/choppy sounds I go slow so i hear them double check and snag a two way signal atleast and dig.
I've had them come in 10/13-11/17 matters where im at and what they are.As I type this im at 10 silver war nickels,7 buffs,1 v nick, and atleast 75-100 Jeff nickels.
Also because of not passing up many signals that hit 10/13-12/14 (if im in a park I usally pass 10/13-15 signals because of tabs)I was able to snag 2 gold rings that hit in the 12/13-14/15 area.
Also if you are in a real trashy park you are gonna pass many nickels as they blend alot with can slaw/tabs.Unless you stare at your screen alot to see them hit...and if you do that will get old fast :surrender:.

If the pennies, dimes and quarters are there, so are the nickels. I think the Audio ID (multi-tone) can cause a little selective hearing geared toward the higher end conductive signals.

I have used Audio tone ID detectors since '85 and find that I have to be VERY careful not to fall into Cherry Picking mode and start ignoring all of the lower conductive stuff. CPD (Cherry Picking Disorder) can be dealt on the minelab by turning off multi-tones; something I don't like to do. Or, simply by setting a goal to find X number of nickels the next time you go out, old or new. This will help your mind pay attention to those low end audio signals, if you are using Conductive/Multi-tones and the nickels will start showing up.

good luck,

Rich

My ET sounds off loud and clear on nickels of all types, my guess? You just have not covered one yet.

My nickle count also went up after I got the E-Trac. Solid 12-13 all around for the most part is a good nickle hit. Of course, I have been fooled by some of those pasky broken off beaver tail pull tabs from time to time.

if your finding other coins nickels are there, nickels are the hardest coin to find because they come in so crazy. I have dug nickels all over the scale. crazy numbers too. RARELY do I ever get the 12-12 perfect signal. I get stuff like 07-12.........10-10.......09-11........even had one at 09-06

if I am at an old house I go more by depth and sound, numbers really don't mean much, it is is 5" deep or more I am digging I don't care what the numbers say. I made it my goal this year to dig as many nickles as possible and so far I have been getting 3-4 nickels every trip out. I have dug a LOT od 1940-50's jeffersons, they seem to be everywhere because so many people SKIP nickel signals
