normal, smooth or long response?

I'm new to the Etrac. Two weeks. Ive done fairly well with 8 silver and various old coins. I hunt very trashy areas. I hunt with sound and confirm with ID. Settings for me that have worked best are: manual sensitivity as high as i can without chatter, deep off, fast on, high trash, multi tone, CO, and normal response. My question is: I have tried long and smooth response because I have read that it works great, but when I try it, it seems that the signals blend together. Again, I generally hunt trashy areas. Is this something normal or do I need to change some other setting so i can differentiate between hits? As i have said I'm doing better with the Etrac than i have with any other machine that I have used in over 40 years of detecting but if I can get even a little better performance then of course that's what I want. I'm looking for some of you Etrac veterans to give me some tips. Thanks!

4 yrs with the etrac here and always use normal, tried the others and normal has always been my favorite, it just works best for me

and I like smooth but I'm a newb

I'm basically a trashy park hunter and i mean some really dense trash. Like you, fast-on works best in those areas.
Had little but some success and a lot of frustration with smooth. My goto is normal also.

I think smooth is one of those personal acquired settings that'll probably work only if one sticks to and learns it.
Problem is when i try smooth and i do from time to time, i get frustrated after a few minutes and revert back to normal.
Normal works for me, 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' kinda sums it up.

8 silver in two weeks, I want you to give me the advice!:detecting:

youre doing great that's for sure.

I am loving this machine. I literally have hundreds of places to go now. I'm just going back to the places that Ive hunted before and making great finds. Like Ive said, I want to be able to use this detector to the fullest. Yet Ive known a great coin hunter most of my life and took a lot of advise from him. He passed away about 10 years ago and he was using an Explorer. I will miss my dad but something he said keeps coming to mind and I will be post that question soon on this forum to find out what others think. That question involves frost in the ground. Thanks for the responses!

I have been using smooth for last few weeks. It does take time to get used to but I have found coins in areas I had covered several times before with various coils. I think it works best for me in conductive multi with most of trash and iron discriminated out or in quick mask with 20 and higher FE discriminated. Also listen for the duration and consistency of the sound. Coins will be fuller, more consistent compared to tabs, caps or trash. Iron falsing will also be shorter and you have to "work" to make it sound good. HH

Ive messed around a little with pitch hold but i will confess this is one option i do not fully understand.
