Not new to detecting but new to Deus

I am getting an XP Deus (v4 with 9" LF coil) and thought I'd reach out to the community for some advice. I've been detecting since the late 70s when I was a teenager and have used many detectors over the years, most lately it's been the Nox and Multi-Kruzer. But there are so many features on the Deus that I want to start with the fundamentals and expand from there. So what are your top tips you'd give to someone getting their hands on a Deus for the first time? Thanks in advance, everyone.

Kapok,
Welcome to the Deus family.
The Deus can be as simple or complicated as you want.
I've had mine for 8+ years and upgraded as it went along.
It's a great machine.

First of all... do you have a copy of Andy's book??
If not get one.

To start out I would run Normalization off.
Pick either Basic 1 or Deus Fast and don't change anything.
Stick with the same program and tones or you brain will get over load.
Go out and hit the TotLots and dig everything.
Listen to the sounds and watch the numbers.
Do this until you are confident with the sounds and what you think is down there.
Can "click" in a short time or take forever like me....

Now you can think of what to adjust to make those targets pop better.

Good luck
& Happy Hunting

Thanks, 'Dog. I'll take your advice. I have a copy of Andy's book on its way.

Yeah, I watch him a lot. Very entertaining guy to say the least.

It’s a great machine I’ve found a ton of silver with mine this year watch calabash or Gary from XP Deus on YouTube

You want to be careful about watch internet videos. Some claim to "know better" but best to stick with the XP factory and Skill School videos. This is according to Andy Sabisch in his book. It's not that they re wrong, just that's what works in their area, not necessarily in your area.

Some videos are just wrong and you will be guessing at which ones. No need to make for more confusion.

MikeLab and Mkus. Good advice about the videos. Many of the ones I see are about tweaking the Deus for performance, comparing the HF/LF coils, etc. What I'm really looking for is the basics, which is hard to find since those videos aren't click-worthy for most Deus owners. I have Andy's book ordered but it won't be coming for another couple of weeks unfortunately.

I'll ask the question another way: If you were starting out doing basic hunting for old coins in an area with a fair amount of non-ferrous trash, what mode/settings would you recommend?

Yeah watch Deus USA to I'm in last video in the Deus Dandies I won with my capped bust half dime!

Kapok I'm responding to your last comment because you appear to be primarily a coin hunter. I've had several machines since I was a kid in the 70s, analogs, SF, FBS etc. I love the Deus(have 2 now) but I can tell you the first time I took it out it was an old vacant lot with every kind of trash there is and I wondered what have I done. Because the processor is in the coil, the Deus is simply more chatty cuz it hears more. Its also worse with the LF which is outdated now. Save up all the clad you're gonna find and put it toward an x35 which is much quieter and great in the coin/trashy areas. Huntingdog was right on about running with norm off. It really helps you separate trash from coins(or rings) easier.Last week I dug a small area and found 60 coin and only 2 pieces of trash cuz I knew what it was telliing me. Don't make some of the same mistakes I made. Try to start out in a cleaner area first like a sidewalk or a yard that the owner will let you dig Will build your self confidence. Also don't do like I did and try to create a program for every site. Its too easy to tweak the one your using if conditions warrent. When you hunt a park save every piece of common trash you find. This will help you see how the junk sounds and looks on the screen with and w/o a coin beside it When you receive Andy's book, one thing you will notice is that he and most of the contributors do not use the basic programs. The deus was built for the European market where most folks field hunt like a relic hunt here and good stuff is all over the place and if doesnt sound like iron you dig it I have 5 custom programs but I only use 2 90% of the time andkeep it uncomplicated by tweaking those prn. Hope this helps. If you're interested let me know and i'll send you a really good "trashy" coin program. HH

Awesome, thank you! My main detectors used to be the Multi-Kruzer and Racer 2, which are pretty chatty, so maybe this won't be a complete shock to me. I'd love your trashy coin program for sure. Question, though: Is the x35 coil that much better than one of the regular HF coils?

2 places the Deus struggles is wet salt sand and seeing through a top layer of modern trash to deeper silver coins the minelabs rule here but if its iron rubbish the Deus will give the minelabs a kicking so its always good to have 2 detectors if you have a top layer of modern rubbish.

nothing is perfect and some detectors do something's better than others and finding out what that is is the secret of metal detecting and also part of the fun.

Calabash Digger has a good you tube video on tonal nuance for Deus beginner, but the sound quality is not there--you gotta put out your own trash items and good targets and listen to the edges. The real easy ones to hear are the square pull tabs. They have a very sharp cut-off edge. Can slaw and beaver tails have a wavering sound. Bottle caps are not consistent. One thing about the Deus it has really good audio so you can hear these anomalies. A lot of people don't even look at the VID numbers. I do but the tones have a huge amount of target info.

I just watched that video last night, so good timing! Am looking forward to getting to know the Deus and it's tones. With the Nox you pretty much just dig high tones unless you're after nickels--then just dig all 12-13s.

Do you own test targets and it will be much clearer audio. Also vary your sweep speed and turn 90 degrees. Use Deus Fast.

Excellent point will sometimes clean the easier stuff with the deus then come with the ML while I still have some back left(smile)

They are both good but for different reasons. The HF runs a little quieter and has a highter kfz option which makes it really good for mid range or low range targets like relics gold and nickels but the 28kfz will still work fine for a lot of your need on the x35. The only problem with the HFs is theres no norm off option which bunches up your vdi #s making it a little harder to tell high kfz coins from trash. I use the x35 more now in the trashy areas and the HF for field hunting like CW relics or for less trashy areas like yards.

Just an update... I've had the Deus out twice now and was surprised at how easy it really is to setup and use. It's going to be like chess--a minute to learn a lifetime to master. But what a fun detector to experiment with, and such a joy to swing! Found this nice sterling ring in an alfalfa field on my second hunt.

The journey begins!
