Not sure what this counter-stamp is. ID help needed.:confused:

Dug this 1917 Wheatie the other day and just noticed the number 8 stamped into Lincoln. Anybody know what it is? Some kind of counter-stamp? Could this be rare? Thanks for any help.
 
If it was a raised 8 it might be a mint error, but counter sunk? Still I would put it in my pocket! Nice find.
 
Could be a target from a local hunt that wasn't recovered?
