Nulling in bad ground...Technical question

My settings were sens 26, gain 10, everything else factory. This site was out of state with nice black soil. You are right about our nasty red clay here though
 
Im in the Fredericksburg area but this happened to me in another state. Havent had that problem around here. Hardest part about diggin in this area is the hard red clay. I guess that is why they used to make bricks out of the stuff. How's the hunting in the Charlottesville area? There has got to be old stuff around there to find. Too much historical preservation and laws here to deal with.
