My Safari seems to go quiet for long periods of time. I've checked the connection and headphones, they seem to be O.K. I can bump the machine and I get my threshold back. I really don't want to send it back to minelab because of the expense and time it took the last time I had trouble with it. I guess if it is bad I'll go back to my Tesoro. Hopefully someone has had this problem and can help me out. Thanks Shorty2

Check your batteries and especially your battery pack for a loose connection or being defective.
Do you have a spare battery pack or can borrow a friends and see if that's a problem.
 
Thanks for the reply reltol, I carry two battery packs with me I know the batteries are good, but never thought about the connection. I do not loose my LCD display. I have tried turning down the sen to see if I can get the threshold back. I will wiggle the battery pack and see what happens. Thanks Shorty2

When you mentioned you bumped it and got some response, I thought there might
be a loose connection. Logic doesn't always win out though, but it's worth a try
versus sending it to Minelab for repair.
 
[size=medium]shorty2, I would not bump your Safari, it'll only damage it further...there has to be a loose connection somewhere either on the battery pack, circuit board or coil. Recheck your headphones again because I have had problems with those myself and all connections before you go any further. Borrow some headphones to make sure they are working ok.If you cannot see anything loose or bad, you may want to contact a reputable electronic repair shop that's been in business for a long time. I don't know much about electronics but I would trust them to be able to do just a basic visual check to see if there are loose connections on the board and then they could clean and resolder them......or you could send it in to Minelab and deal with the wait! (borrow a metal detector in the meantime to use while your waiting) good luck![/size]
 
[size=medium]Have you tried another coil? it could be a bad coil with an intermittent bad connection in it which you cannot repair because it's sealed.[/size]

When your Safari nulls for long periods of time, you have doubled checked in the all metal mode to make sure that it's not just nulling out on rejected targets? My Safari does that regularly, but it is because of all the large amts. of deep iron and tin that I have notched out. The Safari's are incredibly sensitive to that sort of stuff...
 
My first thought was the same as Mtnmn.
If that is the issue, I switched to all metal and never looked back.
Started finding more, or so it seemed.
 
My machine nulls out in coin and jewery when i go over iron. At first i thought i had a problem to but it seems it was just nulling out the iron. It does take a couple seconds to get back to threshold.I used to half to stop moving it and wait for the threshold to come back.I got used the slow response.My machine works fine other then that.Try slowing down your swing a little.
 
Dave is correct, slowing down your swing speed will help your Safari return to threshold quicker. It's something I need to start doing too.
 
Well guys, thanks for all the input. One thing I have learned is that I should have put in all I have done. I have tried using a different set of headphones, different battery pack, different coil. I hunt in mostly relic mode with very little disc. I do not bump my machine hard just little tap to get threshold back. I do not believe the machine is working when the nulling is occuring, (no iron, tinfoil or other metals detected). Like I said I've had the machine since Nov of 09, had to send it back for repairs once and am not impressed with the service. I do have other machines that I think are just as good as the safari so if it keeps this up I'll just switch. Shorty2 One more thing the nulling occurs without the headphones plugged in.
 
rangedoug, My trash settings could be set either way, depending on where I'm hunting. This setting also makes no difference. I'm starting to believe it is either the processor or a loose wire. Thanks Shorty2
 
Sometimes they are just too many targets under your coil. You can try a smaller coil. Your machine will still find good targets even though you hear no threshold. Before you send your machine back try it at a few more locations. Mine has done the same thing before and it was due to a lot of trash. And by the way it does make a diffrence whether you are in high or low trash density. HH :minelab:
 
Hi Guys, Today I used my test garden to find out once and for-all is my machine is messed up. I have removed any "junk" and only have silver targets. After walking around yard detecting and going over the garden, around the fifth trip it started the nulling again-no targets just quiet. Give machine a little jar then threshold back and works again. I detect at least 20-25 hours a week, so I guess if you figure I've had the Safari since Nov of 09, and the booty I've found, it paid for itself. I can see an E-trac or the new Whites in my future!!
