O ring sizes on the Knob shafts, Minelab Excalibur 2005 model

Well-known member
Got a friend on it right now, hope to have some results soon on the sizes...Anyone, bought them before....supplier

I was about to ask the same question on O Ring sizes. I was not able to find any locally that would match so was looking online but of course need the actual measurements. I had measured the old O ring with digital calipers and got about 1.9 mm thickness by 4.66mm inside diameter, but i am not convinced of the accuracy as the old O rings are clearly worn out . I want to be precise as I use mine for diving.

I have emailed Minelab but they have not responded yet, I am not sure if they would release this info but If they do I will post it.

New O-Rings ordered, will pass along the sizes once install, And Pool tested.............obn

Minelab responded to my email with the expected response "Minelab does not approve of end users carrying our repairs on Excalibur units" fortunately they did still supply the specs on the O rings. Here they are:

Smaller oring 2 per shaft- 1.5mm thick x 3mm ID, 6mm OD

top Oring 1 per shaft- 1.5mm thick x 5mm ID, 8mm OD

the large end cap housing o ring- 3mm thick x 32mm ID, 38mm OD

Thanks James for the Post, I've had the O-rings for a week now, just wanted to test all before I posted..I had only asked for the ones on the shaft...here is what came back from McMaster-Carr........

On the top O-ring near the knob (And I got this by looking up the part number, so I think it is the size that was sent} And you figure this model of excalibur was designed and put together in Ireland, so it would make sense the size be metric, but with the compression of the knob this size fit the best?.....

Width 1/16"
Inside Diameter 3/16"
Outside Diameter 5/16

the small O-ring 1.5 x 3.5

The Engineer that recommended these said, Silicon was the best, but Nitrile would last longer under the stress of turning...

After seeing your sizes and mine, I really have to do a test in the pool now....Picture of the old O-ring (original) And the new one from McMaster-Carr........I'm going to keep the 1.5 x 3.5 but I may order the other two just to have them and check out the top one for fit ...come in packs of 100, anyone need some...cheap.......thanks again Mud-Diver

looks like the sizes on the top O-ring are close, but I'm going to order the metric, its a bit bigger

I sincerely appreciate the research, detailed descriptions and ordering info! Very timely, I just opened one of my Excals and have a weeping shaft O ring (caught in time, no damage).

One additional note for all, I spoke with one of the ML techs, they have started using Dow Corning 111 to lubricate the O rings. I haven't had any problems with silicon grease, but it will deteriorate over time in salt water. You can purchase the Dow Corning 111 at Grainger p/n 6Y762 $17.19 per tube (large tube).

Best Regards,
Dave

Just wondering about the outcome for the O-ring replacements. Has anyone determined a source?

Replaced O-rings on just 2 Excalibur's so far, not to hard. Just have to press the knob shaft thur to the inside of the housing. Easier if you take the top O-ring out first. I put some Varsily penetrating oil on them first to make them swell, then just pulled the top o-ring out, then the shaft just pushes thur, very easy. Replace all O-rings (with a coating of Plumbers Grease) then using long needle nose pliers to place the shafts back in to place, putt ting the top O-ring on once shaft is in place. O-ring source McMaster Carr......Link http://www.mcmaster.com/#o-rings/=cprzqm

Sorry to reactivate an old thread.

I am servicing an old excalibur 800

But how do the metal shafts come out of the casing ?

Do they have to be pushed in our out ?

If out how do you remove the c clip & more importantly how do you put them back on ?

thanks

Opps sorry.

Missed the bit about removing shafts on last answer by Joe.
Does not seem to be a way of editing a post after a short while.

Need to get some of the smaller O rings.

is the 3mm or the 3.5mm ones to go for ?
Did you decide ?
