OK, so I have an SE coming. What other coils are available for it?

What coils would you recommend and which would you advise me to skip over?

I know the first thing I want is a smaller coil. I think I will prefer the SR 8" over the Minelab if only because it is lighter. I was told that Ralph also offer's a 5" coil. Do you use either of them or another small coil?

I am a big fan of small coils, especially on heavier detectors but i know nothing about Explorer coils.

Thank you for the help.

I watched the Explorer video on Youtube, by Gary Brun. It was enjoyable but seemed very generic. Are there other resources, video or book that you would recommend to help learn the capabilities of the SE?

Thanks,

Julien

I have a 5" Excelerator that I use.

I looked around and went ahead and ordered a 6" EXcelerator. Sun Ray coils are still not available due to some backorder from a cable company. I will probably end up with an 8" and a 14" for becah work. I find that in most places I hunt and with most detectors, these small coils are the ticket. I hope someone will chime in if there are certain coils to stay away from.

I can't wait to get my SE!

You ideally need a 5 inch , 8 inch and 12 inch coil plus stock coil for really cleaning a patch of land out of every last bit of metal. I use the stock coil plus a detech 8 inch and 5 inch for the really pounded out sites, the 5 and 8's inch coils recover a few smaller and larger bits missed with stock coil in the trash. I would then go over the patch of land with a 12 inch coil. Heres my general method for working a patch of land out . 1 Work the site thoroughly with stock coil and 8 inch coil. Phase 2 go over carefully with 5 inch coil and sweep slow digging everything out of the sites all low tones are dug finally revealing those thin rings that live with foil. Phase 3 pound the site out with a big 12 inch coil. Out of a small patch of river bank i recovered 200 coins this way plus a few rings... Yes i get blisters digging all of the trash out but i miss close to nothing. Finally i go over the patch of land with a 16 khz machine which will often reveal even more targets missed with the explorer.. Yes the explorers miss certain types of targets in trashy situations some coins can elude the explorers although very few to be honest.

Thanke Doc, that is good advice. I am convinced that more than new sites, we need to work the old ones better. There are only so many new/old sites and almost no good virgin sites left. But... there are plenty of good targets left in pounded sites. That is why I try to have the best detectors and keep going back over places with small coils and good machines. It works!

What do you use for a 17 khz machine? I have a Tejon and it is close to that. It is a great machine with the 5.75 coil. The Cortes run's at 10 khx and it is also good with the small coil. I also use an F75, it run's at 13 khz.

I am curious why 17 khz is good. Why doesn't the Explorer with it's 28 frequency operation leave things that a 17 khz machine will find.

Thanks,

J

I have nearly every coil made for the SE and believe it or not I wish they made more, because every time I hunt in a spot, I end up using most of them. My favorite is the Sun Ray 8 inch stealth. Next would be the 4 x7 excellarator, and then the 10 x 14 excellerator. I have a Joey 5x10 coming so we'll see how that one works. But coils are kind of fickle, you get really good ones and sometimes sucky ones, didn't realize this until I started getting doubles of coils when I bought a used SE that came with several coils I already had. So two of the very same coils from the same manufacturer can sometimes not work the same. Bet you our machines are like that too, although I have to say Mine lab makes a hell of a work horse, I mean I abuse the living heck out of these machines and they just ignore it. Overall quality when it comes to coils, I would have to give hands down to Sun Ray. They shrink wrap their connectors (5 pin) so your little screws don't fall out and their coils are pretty consistent and solid. As for sensitivity to smaller objects, I'd say the elliptical coils seem to pick up the really tiny things and pinpoint better, but rounds get better depth. It would be nice if they would start making monoloop coils for the SE instead of DD's, the only one I have ever found is an 8 inch Excellerator, however the screws fell out of it from the connector on week one. When you get a new coil always wrap electrical tape around the 5 pin connector (the silver part at the top end of the coil wire that plugs into either your probe box or machine housing) that way the two tiny screws don't fall out, all of them eventually will, both Sun Ray and Mine lab coils heat shrink wrap theirs, so you don't have to. Good luck with your SE, it's a slow learn, smaller coils will speed that up and make it easier.:detecting:

If they ever become available again I will try one. I think a 6 8 and 10 will be good and the 4.5x7 sound's very interesting too.

Thanks for the input.
