OKAY GUYS I found a BETTER PINPOINTER THAN GARETTS I THINK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:shrug:

I wonder why he didn't also try the pocket UniProbe. It's very sensitive but not as durable as the ProPointer.
If the targets is not too deep, I have used the UniProbe tip and run it on the surface, then run a brass probe down to hit the target. Also, I have used it under bleachers etc where I can't swing a regular metal detector coil, and just swept it on the surface then dig the hits. Did the same around the wife's plants where I couldn't swing a regular coil.
Now I also like the ProPointer for the slimness and durability too.
 
I have both and I usually reach for for the Propointer. The Pistolprobe is a lot bigger and a little unwieldy. The sound is not loud enough and you have to hold the button down to use it. Maybe I will like it better if I spend more time using it. :detecting:
 
Guys, a lot of you are blinded by brand loyalty. I am a Whites man but i know for a fact their new pin pointers are not worth a crap. You have
more ability with a sensitivity control. When you first dig your plug you turn your sensitivity up so you know where the target is , then you
turn your sensitivity down, if it doesn't sound off then you know you have to dig a little more. As you get closer to the target you have your
sensitivity turned down to about 1 inch. You will never scratch a coin like this. Nothing sounds better than your pin pointer sounding
off at a inch on one little spot, you know this is a small target verses it sounding off all over the bottom of the hole. The guy in the video didn't
know to turn the sensitivity up on the Whites for his air test. Harbor Freight has a pin pointer they call a hand held detector. It has a sensitivity
control that to me is essential with a BRIGHT led light with a loud response for $15,00.00. So far i couldn't be happier.
 
I'll hop on here, even though I don't own a Garrett machine, not due to any loyalty, but bought the machines I felt had the features I wanted for the price, at the time. I do however, use a ProPointer. Hands down twice as good as either of my 2 Bullseyes, or the modified Wizard, and other homemade pinpointers I've used and thrown away.

I looked at the Pistol probe, but having no vibrate mode was strike 1 ( I use a full over the ear headphones and don't like to attract attention with the pinpointer beeping), having to adjust it was strike 2, and looking like a gun up here in Canada was strike 3.

The depth of the ProPointer is just right. As mentioned earlier by Khouse, it determines for me in a couple of seconds whether the target is poppable or whether it's time to dig a plug. There have been too many times that the extra range on the Pistol would have had me chasing nails or other small bits of trash that were a couple of inches off to one side of my real target, as well.
 
I am getting the Pro pointer because it is far and away the best and most practical pinpointer on the market today.

I will soon have a Pistol probe and a Pro pointer. I will let you know what I think in a week or two.

I agree on a few of the comments made about the Pistol Probe.

1. It should not be called Pistol Probe. (Pistol, noun, A short firearm intended to be held and fired with one hand)

2. It does look like a gun from a distance

3. It is a PI detector and it gets good depth. I see this as being a pretty handy thing in some situations especially when trying to locate a small target in a big hole which is a situation that often happens at the beach in wet sand. You must remember that this detector can be detuned to respond at very close distances, you donot have to use all of that sensitivity if you do not want to.

4. True , it will be hot on iron.

5. It will interfere with your main detector. I have not found this to be much of a problem with my other PI pointer.

I am gettig the Pistol Probe out of pure curiosity and at the moment here in Australia I think it will attract a lot of attention and it will be interesting to see how long it will be before I get a law enforcing type person coming over to check it out.

OK guys , my pin pointing skills su@k so I just ordered one from amazon 169.00 never bought anything on line,I like to hold it in my hand first .but I thought i would try it .is this a good deal?
 
It doesn't matter now because you already bought it. You may like it since you've never used a Propointer to compare. If it works for you then that's all that matters.
 
I do good with my Automax Precision V4 Pinpointer they gave me free with my ACE 250 when I bought it at Kellyco. I usually find my target without it, but use it when I get frustrated. Hey it was free, what the heck.
 
I had been metal detecting for close to 45 years before I bought a pinpointer out of curiosity, it was a Technetics and it drained batteries faster than it took me to say Bloody hell what a piece of crap.
I then tried a Vibra- Techtor 720 PI unit designed mainly for beach work and shallow scuba. It is fine, It is a bit bulky with a 4.5 inch diam coil. and it signals targets by vibration only (quite strong and easy to feel) The unit is waterproof to 30 feet. Pinpointing is quite accurate and puts you right on the money.

This detector responds to Aussie 5cent coins (0.76 inch diam) at around the two inch mark
10cents (0.92 inch diam) at 2.5 inches and the 20cent coin (1.12 inch diam) at 2.75 inches

Turning the coins on edge reduces these distances by about 25%.

Being a PI it does not like iron trashy areas. and you have to keep your main metal detector coil about 6 foot away when pinpointing. but overall it doesn't do a bad job and it has been super handy at the beach. I will have my Garrett Pro pointer soon and because it does not interfere with my Infinium it should be a pleasure to use. Pity it is not totally waterproof. to several feet at least.

My Pro Pointer arrived today a few moments ago and first impressions are that it is every bit as good as what everyone posting on this forum has been saying.
Very tough and rugged with excellent sensitivity on coins, rings and gold. It seems to be more sensitive on the side than at the tip..

Day two with the Pro pointer.

Handles mineralisation very well but don't wave it around very fast while pinpointing otherwise it can miss small items like open ear rings and toe rings and light weight chains. Aside from that, this gadget is definitely a keeper and in a league of its own

PS. I also have a Pistol Probe; It also is a keeper and aside from the aggressive appearance it works very well

I wont give up my Garrett Pin pointer NEVER :nono:
 
I will not be parting with this one any time soon, it realy is an excellent pinpointer, and on top of that, it looks and feels like it could withstand a nuclear blast.

Awr come on Tom don't be too harsh on the pistol Ptobe, granted it's big and ugly but as a pinpointer goes it works pretty well. Mine will detect a 0.15 gm flat river nugget resting on top of a 2lb slab of iron stone at a distance of 1 inch and it detected a 4gm nug straight through the slab (1.5 inch thick) with the probe tip about 1 inch above the stone. It was a bit jittery on the iron but when the nug was placed under the stone the probe gave a solid repeatable signal. I do not know what freq the Pro pointer operates at but the Pistol Probe seems to working around the 6.6Khz mark which is quite high for a PI unit.
The sensitivity of the Pistol Probe is lower with the Frequency Control at the low end of its range and quite a bit higher with the Freq Control at the high end of its range

I agree tho that the Pro Pointer has so many positve points in its favour that there is not much point in having anythig else.
 
Hello All, I recently won a Pro pointer at local club hunt. I placed a new 9v battery in it and did a air test on some coins. I'm getting a little over 1.75ins on a penny and 2ins on a nickel. Does these sound normal? Thanks EddieB
 
HI eddieB.

I get 1.75 inches on a 1991 Liberty one cent and the same for a 1994 Liberty quarter.
They are the only USA coins I have.
