Okay, took the plunge and got a new SE today...

Put it together and went out to my "limited" test garden. The only setting I changed was to go from Conduct to Ferrous sounds (that just makes more sense to me). Quite a different beast from what I'm used to. Went back and forth between a silver dime and a modern nickel. Now while on the digital screen the ID numbers would change when going from the nickel to the dime, but they wouldn't change when going from the dime back to the nickel until I moved the coil sideways past the side edge of the coil and back. (the tones changed right away) Funny how this maneuver wasn't necessary when going from the nickel to the dime. What's going on? Looks like I'm going to need a lot of help. Thanks, Ray. Oh and I had posted earlier asking about the depth indicator being affected by the coil size. A Minelab Rep today told me that the Explorer would "compensate" when switching from the ten to the eight inch coil and that the eight would read the same as the ten when it came to depth...what's up with that...that isn't what anyone else said when responding to my post. Confused, more than usual, in Texas.

Now we got 2 guys or more scratching their heads....That will be a question I will ask Sandy from Minelab when I meet her at a Hobby show coming up. I was told this by a guy that builds coils, and I am sure he knows more than me......I am just a dumb electrician not a tech for Minelab, so If I steered you wrong then I stand corrected and have learned from it......so till we get the correct answer, just dig it! Depth gauges are just an indication of its there in the ground, dig it! My first observation of the Explorer is the depth gauge is not very accurate, just to keep in mind what you find at what depth it reads on screen, like newer coins reading 3-4 inches and when the older coins come out and it is reading midway to 3/4 of the way down then it is a good indication it is older....but not in a field that has been filled with top soil.....its crazy and never the same....I will get back to ya on this......If Sandy was the rep you talked to then...Is she a tech? or a rep?.....It may make a big diff. in answer you get. I personnaly don't care if depth gauge is off....cause I still dig it and find the coins that sound off.....but ya it would be nice.

it really doesn'y make a big difference to me...I've been doing this long enough not to put a lot of faith into a depth indicator anyway. So, overwhelmed and a little frustrated, I'm off on my first hunt this morning with the SE. I know of a vacant house that belongs to a client of mine and it is scheduled for demolition pretty soon. It once was the parsonage for a nearby church and it's right near the local universty's campus. I hunted it with another detector for about an hour last weekend and the targets were plentiful and varied...I think the perfect place to start my Explorer training. Thanks ahead for any help you guys here might be able to give me. Think I'll take a small notebook and make a few notes on each target...I'm a slow hunter anyway. Ray in Waco, TX.
