Old guy but ready to be a newbie!

My wife and I are a professional couple living in Pittsburgh. She just retired a month ago and is hounding me to do the same. My two likes are copying morse code, as I did that in the military years ago, and the want to metal detect. Well she sweetened the pot by stating that if I retire she would buy me a new ctx 3030! Should i make the plunge?

That's a big jump going to the CTX as a first machine. If you're SURE you want to metal detect, then by all means jump in. If you're not sure, I would start out with a lower end machine that won't cost as much to see if this is a hobby you really want to get into.

Thanks Marc for the reply and the offer for help, as I am sure i will need a great amount of education, however, that is the fun of the hobby! It is a great journey to try to master something but the trip is worth every step!

Wow..that's a tough decision, especially if you love what you do for a living. But, I'm sure you can learn to love metal detecting very quick to take your mind off your recent retiring..... I know I'll be out more after I retire in another 20 years... You have to learn whatever machine you buy..so it may as well be a CTX 3030.. It may take you a while longer, but in the end you'll be thankful I'm sure..Good luck and happy hunting!

Dont forget that part of detecting is finding or having search sites . Nothing more frustrating than not having a location. That can kill your spirit . Good luck with it though. It is a great hobby.

Same here. Go for the CTX. You may not lose interest with the CTX as opposed to a lesser detector. If you lose interest you can always sell it. You would lose some money, but the cost may be as little as a few hundred if you buy it right.

Well your family now its time to get the ctx and let it rock . Its not brain surgery its all about repeatable signals .I assure you if you can spend that much time protecting our home then The ctx should be shaking in its box. ..You will be fine richlin.cantvwait for the pics of your finds ...

If you can learn morse code you can learn the CTX. It will be a longer learning curve because you have no experience detecting to relate to, but that's ok, you can do it. There are several people on this forum to assist you. This is a true family affair. Once you become a pro remember to pay it forward. Bart at Big Boys Hobbies is a good guy to work with when buying a detector. Gone hunting for history is very, very very knowledgable on CTX and AT Pro detectors. He is always willing to assist.

Your going to have so much fun it's going to scare you.

Most folks that get real serious about this hobby rarely have just one detector. At last count I had 7, and I use ever one of them. You also need a Garrett pro pointer and a leasche digger. Don't mess around buying anything other than those brand items, you will be wasting time and money. Bart at Big Boys has it all at a reasonable price. So do other dealers, but Bart really takes care of his customers.

T is a tremendous advantage having your wife on your side in this.

Unless you are getting paid to drink beer or something, RETIRE! I found this sport 3years ago, and WISH I had taken it up when I was younger...always had the interest, just no money or time...anyway, I have never been in better shape in the last 30 yrs my life since taking this up, and the wife has gotten more really nice jewelry out of me in the last three years than in our entire 33yrs of marriage! This sport should consume you and keep you out of trouble...let us know if we can help make that happen! Heres something for inspiration...found about 3 mos. into the sport...

i retired a couple of years ago and once i started detecting i never looked back. Great exersize. gives you incentive to get out and do something. never know what you will find keeps it fun. get the ctx 3030... i bought 3 detetors and pretty quickly found their limitations. Get the best. you won't be sorry. I live in the BUffalo, NY area and will be happy to meet with you and show you how to use the ctx.
DO IT NOW !!!!! don't wait... I am so glad that i retired when i did, life is too short to not be having fun especially if you are healthy...
