Old homestead yields nice cache.:yikes:

First let me apologise for the poor quality picture. It was a scan of the photo from my cousin Gene. He doesn't have his computer set up yet so I am doing his story for him. Gene owns about forty acres on an old homestead. The story goes that the old man who lived there buried his money in fruit jars. Gene was doing a lot of excavating clearing off a spot to set up his triple wide home on and in the process he unearthed one of this old fellows caches. Gene walked out in the backyard a couple of weeks ago and looked down and saw something shinny. At first he thought is was a piece of tinfoil, but it was a silver dollar. Then he found a few pieces of a broken jar and it hit him!! He ran to his house grabbed his Explorer and he no sooner turned his machine on and it started going nuts. Coin after coin after coin and then the Explorer started quieting down. What a rush it must have been for him and a dream that we all would like to find someday. I don't have the dates of all the coins, but the oldest was a 1874 Morgan dollar. The coins were 3 Morgan dollars, 6 piece dollars, 22 Walker halves, 3 Barber halves, 2 liberty quarters, 19 Washington quarters, 74 Merc dimes, 5 Rosie dimes, 13 buffalo nickels and 51 Jefferson nickels which were mostly war nickels for a grand total of 198 coins. Not a bad haul for one day and right in his own back yard.:clapping: Since he took the picture he found 13 more Merc dimes in a different area and said they looked like they had been in a fire. More than likely another cache was dug up. The latest coin date was a 1946 Rosie dime and the story goes the old guy past away in the early 50's. I have no doubt that there are more jars of coins buried there and who knows, maybe even some with a few gold coins. I'm waiting for a call from my cousin Gene telling me to come on down and do some detecting with him. I'll keep you all informed and thanks for looking and sharing with me my cousins great finds. HH.

What we all wouldn't give to find a cache like that..

Thanks for the great story!. Every one of us dreams about an oppurtunity like that...Makes the mind race!!

I really liked the story you shared. It makes me wonder what hard times must have been like to make a person think that they needed to bury there money in the ground in jars. I wonder if he had a son that stole from him all the time or if he was just a friggin nut. Anyway, I cant wait to understand the bleeps and burps my minelab tells me so I can find a good prize.

Looks like a lot of fun finding that many Coins in one area. You will have to find out if there were any Semi-Key and Key Dates in amungst that Cache. I can bet that he's detecting that Farm Site in hopes of another Cache of Coins. Glad you were able to post a Pic of that Terrific Find. Continued Success, Good Luck and HH to you and especially your Cousin's Silver Mine!:detecting:

Thanks James. I do believe my cousin has a coin book and has probably looked up some of those coins. I didn't get the dates on them. He just told me the oldest and earliest and I did make a mistake on the Morgan dollar. I think it was a 1878. I'm sure Gene has been out there hunting like crazy. He did tell me that before he bought the property that other people have detected around there, but nothing found. Someone even ripped the walls apart in the old homestead looking for his caches. I do hope to go down to his place and help out just in case Gene's arm gets tired. I'll keep you all informed about any other further finds. Thanks again James and HH to you buddy.

People weren't crazy because they hid their money. They either had no trust in relatives or banks. Kind of weird the old guy didn't save pennies, but my cousin isn't complaining one bit. Good luck in getting your machine figured out and who knows who might find that next great cache. HH.
