Oldest find to date/Coin-Button

Crocket

I dig my first large cent last week! I believe it's 1803 I can make out 03 but the coin is pretty crusted. I also found a old button that reads on the Back (James S. Smith Co. New York) Front has a Eagle on top of a Crest bottom of the button reads EXCELSIOR. with 13 Stars around the outside edge. The button I cleaned with soapy water and Q tips and Came out pretty good.

The button is a New York State seak button TomB

Thanks for the info, Any idea from what year?

Crocket...I'm not familiar with the back mark on your button. Most of the New York State seal buttons that I have seen or recovered have Scovill MFG Co. Watwebury on the back. Haven't been able yet to find any information on James S Smith Co. Where did you find the button. If it was found at a CW site I'd say it is Civil War era. TomB

Thanks for your input. The button was found just south of West Point Military Academy in NY State(Hudson Valley). Close to a place know as Doodle Town, NY. The British held the town capture some were around 1776 Revolutionary War.
