omega 8000..power??

Well-known member
i just got my omega 8000 in the mail..put it together and checked it out. noticed the handle was mounted off center. looking down its at 1 o'clock..i was like wow thats really off! i called teknetics and they are sending me another upper shaft. so we will see. so tell me ...does this machine have alot of power?? the reason im asking is i have the mxt pro and the g2 and i can max both of them out in my house and outside. they are smooth at max.. now the omega 8000 once i get it up to 55 to 60 it chatters like crazy. big time emi.even out in my yard where ive never had any problems cranking any machine up, it goes crazy. is this normal? am i supposed to use it with the sensativity 55 to 65? maybe its just chatty like the t2.. well let me know what ya think thanks

Mine will chatter in the house and some within 15-20 feet on the house, outside. On city parks and out on school yard and the like, I am usually able to run mine with 99 sen. and 1 disc., so seldom is emi a problem with the Omega, for me. It really is a "pure" coin shooter. You will like it very much. HH jim tn

this omega chattered to the point of being unusable above 60 or so sens... the screen was jumping around very bad.. thats inside or outside. maybe i will send it back and try another unit..not sure what i should do..

Outside the frequency selection, the only other way to mitgate any EMI noise is with the Gain and Threshold control settings.

There are four methods of EMI mitigation:

First is the Frequency switch. Set your threshold to a positive number, run the gain up until it starts to chatter and then switch frequencies until you find the best one, then reset your controls where you'd rather have them.

Second is the threshold control. -9 to +9, zero inclusive. Pick your Threshold setting and then change the Gain to support it, or pick your Gain setting and change the Threshold setting to support it.

Third is the staying at the "still coil" settings.
With the coil held motionless, adjust your gain and threshold settings for stability.

Fourth is staying at the "in motion" coil settings. With the coil in motion over the ground, set your gain and threshold settings for stability. You can usually run higher gain setting with the coil in motion than you can with the coil held motionless. However, it will chatter when the coil held still.

Well...there is a fifth if you can call it that. That would be turning your gain and threshold knobs full forward until they hit the stop. Sometimes that will put you into a reduced performance state that will also mitigate some EMI. I don't recommend this, and it is inconsistant.

Always want to do the first method. The others depend on ground conditions and the targets you are after.

The Omega only has two adjustments..disc level and sensitivity. There is no seperate gain and threshold. For the original poster: the Omega is a good machine and a darn fine one for coins, however, it has one glaring fault for me...it suffers badly from EMI. About 1/3rd of the sites that I hunt I have to set the sensitivity level down to around 50 or so...and therefore lose depth. I hunted a CW site in central ky that had power lines over a footbal field length away and could not get my sens setting above 43. Now, in sites out in the middle of nowhere I can run my sens up in to the high 90's. I am not trying to bash the Omega, but like the Fisher F75 there are some places where it is basically unusable.

yeah i know about the g2 i have one.. i just wanted to try the omega to see if it was capable of deeper silver than my mxt pro. if i have to turn the power way down to 50 or so im afraid of losing depth. i dont like really noisey machines.. i guess i will make up my mind real soon.

Guys, Don't give up on the Omega, ya just got to get the deep targets under the coil to see what it will really do. Untill I found a eagle coat button at 10'' with the G2, I was not really impressed with it, but now, I listen to the little high tone churps mixed in the iron. To be honest, ANY VLF machine that give you a good signal beyond 8" is a good machine!!!

It's not that the Omega won't go deep, I have found that in my soil it maxes out at 9-10". The problem is that I cannot use it on so many sites do to the EMI problem. I even tried istalling 2 RF chokes on the coil cable...and it did nothing. Since I am primarily a relic hunter, the G2 just makes more sense than the Omega.

i mostly hunt coins and jewlery..i love finding old silver coins. when i bought the omega i planned on finding deep silver with it. thought maybe it would do better than my mxt pro since its a lower frequency.my g2 finds coins very well. i dont know yet just how deep it will find coins and not sure how it will do on deep silver. in a park setting the g2 was amazing. most of the coins were in the 5in depth range and it was loud and clear..so it should go deeper. i may call kellyco today and see what i have to do to ship it back(omega 8000)....

EMI has been a problem for many of the machines that have been mentioned but they got it right with the G-2. JMHO

If your wanting to dig deep old silver coins with the Omega---take that 10" stock concentric coil off & set it in the closet!---Put the 11" DD coil on the Omega and you've got something to talk about (depth wise), It will run quieter also.----The "trade off" is that (being a DD) you will have a little more problem with steel bottle caps.----If I'm in heavy trash & am concerned with target seperation, I pull out the 5" coil.---That's been my experience with the Omega & where I hunt anyway and my wife & I are each on our second one (the ground where we hunt is quite mineralized)-------If you REALLY want to "conquer" EMI and a quiet machine, stick with that G2!---It gets close to the same depth of the Omega (both with 11" DD coils) and the 5" DD coil on the G2 is "unrivaled" in trash IMHO.------------Del
