I went back to the spot I found the 3 Cent Nickel and wasn't having much luck. first pulled up cheap ring, then a little aluminum piece that says eat then has an arrow then says town. I headed to the woods and was finding nothing for a good while then started finding a few headstamps, then got a solid 12-44 and it was a 1950 wheat, kept on swinging and working my back out of the woods and was almost out when I got a weak 12-46,13-47 signal and set to digging with no luck swung over it again and I was off a little and took another chunk of dirt out and rechecked the hole and nothing on the TRX, checked the loose dirt I had thrown out and bazinga the TRX goes nuts. sweep away a little dirt and there is a 1920 D SLQ ... my first SLQ and a semi key date to boot. kept working that area a little and found a 36 wheat. Silver #49 for the year

Congrats on the 1920D SL! Can you show us a photo? We love picks! HH

just click where it say Picture

that's one coin that doesn't seem to pop up very often..... VERY NICE!

the only part of the date you can see is the 0 barely, it's a type 2 so it can only be 1920, the D is clearly visible

Surf, can you elaborate on how you can determine it is a 1920? I have found 2 SLQ's, both without dates.

By the way, you are 2 ahead of me in silver count this year! :(

Thanks,

Bryan

The image below is for visual reference.

From 1916 thru 1924, the date was one of the highest points of detail.
From 1925 thru 1930, the date was recessed into the coin to preserve the date.

Notice how the date area on the SLQ surfchunker found is flat and not recessed.
That leaves, without a doubt, that surfchunkers' SLQ is from 1920.

Both of your dateless SLQ's were no doubt from the 1916 thru 1924 date range as I found a 1925 SLQ that is very thin, but because the date is recessed, the date remains.

Hope this helps... Robert

yup exactly what bertman said. also 1916 and early 1917 SLQ type 1 had no stars under the Eagle on the back

Also notice the hair detail:

Type 1 - the hair flips up
Type 2 - the hair curls down.

I found another dateless SLQ which has an "S" mint mark and the hair flips up and no stars on the back.
Even though the date is completely gone, I know it is a 1917s from these design details.

An early SLQ or not, they're great and rare to find.

Yeah, the mint screwed up with the protruding and wearable date on the earlier ones.
Only found one so far this year and it was dateless.

Congratulations on your first Stander! Thanks for the pictures.
