Only hunted on Saturday this weekend. Rained most of the day but found a Key Date!Part:1:yikes:

Tim and I decided to get out once again this Saturday in hopes of hitting a spot with more Silver. We were successful in finding what we were looking for but it was spotty. The Weather wasn't cooperating with us at all either. It would Rain, then stop, then Rain again and then slow down. Then the Wind had to pick up and the Rain decided to just keep coming down on us. We had Waterproof Jackets on but we didn't have Waterproof Pants and let me tell ya, they were drenched by the time it got dark out. I was watching Tim out in the field detecting with the Rain and Wind just pounding him and I just sat there laughing because he was seriously trying to find Silver in about a 30 MPH Wind with Rain coming down in Sheets out in the open. :laugh: As for me, I was getting a little disgusted with the Weather. :angry: We were about to leave and we ran across another site that looked like it could have some Potential. Well, I told Tim to give me a holler if he found Silver. About 5 Minutes later, Tim waves me out of the Car and tells me that he found a couple Wheaties and just found a 1923 Merc. As I looked at the Dime, I thought to myself "Hey, there could be a 21-d Merc at this spot". I knew I should have said it to Tim out loud before I started Hunting. I really didn't like getting back out of the Car and Detecting in the Wind and Rain but I said "what the hell, I'm already soaked". I shot a straight line across this spot to one side of it and soon found a Silver Roosevelt Dime. Then about 10 feet away from this I got a good 28 Reading on Digital that was about 8" Deep. I cut a Plug and started digging for the Target. I started removing some dirt out of the hole and seen a Silver Dime for a second and then it got covered up again in the hole when dirt fell back in. I reached in and found it and wanted to see what the year was since it was a Merc. I sat there staring at the Dime for about 15 Seconds and finally said out loud "NO WAY!!!". Staring back at me was the Coin I thought could possibly be lost here at this site. A Nice 1921-d Mercury Dime! I couldn't believe it!!! I then hurried and covered the hole and rescanned it in hopes of another Coin but it went silent. Then I hurried over to Tim and asked him if he was finding anything else. He found a few more Wheaties and just dug an 1899 Indian Head. He then says to me "What did you find!!!". I told him I just dug a Key Date! I put it in his hand and he couldn't believe it that I straight lined it across this spot we were at, right to the area where this Beauty was sitting. This was only a few minutes into the hunt. Tim has never found one of these and this was my 2nd that I have found Detecting. I also found a 1903 Indian Head and a few Wheaties before we left. We agreed we were going back to this spot and we will pattern it until it yields no more, or close to it. The other Coins came from a Church, and another site where a Church once stood. Here is what I found during this 1 Day Outing. I found another 6 Silver. They included 1 Barber Dime dated 1905, 3 Mercury Dimes dated 1921-d (Key Date),1935-s,1943-d, and 2 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1946 and 1959-d. For Nickels, I found 1 Liberty V-Nickel dated 1906 and 2 Buffalo Nickels dated 1916-d (better Date and Mint Mark) and 1925. I will be posting the Indian Heads I found with the Nickels. The Indian Heads I found are dated 1882,1901, and 1903. For Misc. Items, I found an Older Symbol Lighter, part to an Old Pen, and a Briggs & Stratton Key. The rest of the finds will be posted shortly in Part:2. Here is the rest of the finds. I found an Aluminum Token that reads Good For 25c In Trade on the Front and on the Back it reads Stavig Brothers. The last finds are the Wheat's. I found 20 of them in this short hunt. They are dated (2)12,16-d,17-d,(2)19,24-d (Semi-Key),25,36-d,37,39-d,40-s,41-d,(2)44-d,46,49-d,(2)53-d, and 58-d. On the Dirty Pics of the Wheat's, there is 19 but I found 1 more that I missed and forgot to rescan the Wheat's with this other Wheat Penny. OOPS!!! I got out today to a resort that was built in the late 40's. Found a couple of mercs and a roosie. A pile of wheats.

Still way dry here.

Good to know you are getting out and finding some Nice Old Coins. I figured I best take this Key Date since I let you have the 1922 Plain Wheat Cent.:poke: Keep the finds comin' Chris and Good Luck and HH if you get out during the week.:cheers:

Nice nickels you found. I never seem to concentrate on that hit as it just always seems to be trash. Don't get me wrong...if I'm at a pounded to death site...then I MUST concentrate on the nickel type hits...as the high hits were gone years ago. Most of the sites I hunt anymore are definately pounded sites...but different coils and different settings still give some high hits to chase every now and then. I just love to go to a site that I and others have hit 100's of times over the years and still try and pop out some wheaties and silver. The rain was nasty on Saturday here and that was the only day I could hunt too so I went anyway. I had about 5 hours and would hunt...then have to run to the car...then hunt another 1/2 hour...then run from the rain again. I will try and post this evening or tommorrow. Anyway..very nice finds by you as usual.
 
The reason I found these Nickels is because they were in the Church Yard we were at. There wasn't hardly anything for Trash Items so when you got the Low Tone Hit of a Nickel, you could bet that was what it was going to be. The Church Yard Coins were for the most part 6" with a Wheatie about 8"+ Deep towards the back of the yard. There is also more Coins at the other Church Site that no longer has a Church on it. Way too big of an area to keep pounding so that is another site to go back to. It seems that I have one heck of a Sixth Sense in predicting what I am about to find. I believe it has happened at least 3 times this year that I have gone out saying to myself I was going to find a certain Coin and WHAM!, there it is! Too bad I wasn't thinking a 16-d Merc!!!:rage: But I can't complain on such a great find.:happy: Good Luck and HH when you get out swinging.:detecting:
 
There's been a few times this year when I have called what I was about to find. I would need a Half and there one was, or a Foreign Coin that had a good chance of a 1st Place in my Clubs Find Of The Month Category, and then a Canadian Fish Scale would pop out towards the end of the hunt. If you don't know what a Fish Scale is, it is the Canadian Nickel made of Silver that is the same size as an American Half Dime. I hope to have a feeling that one of these outings will net me my 1st Gold Coin. This time, try not to get rid of it. It was tough going in those conditions and I sure warmed up fast when I pulled that Merc out of the dirt. Going back here sometime and I hope to find more nice Coins at this site. Thanks again and Good Luck and HH.:detecting:
 
A Key Date Coin is a Rarer Coin that one doesn't find very often due to Mintage of Coin. Some Key Dates have over 1,000,000 Minted like this Coin has or just a few Minted like the 1913 Liberty V-Nickel with a reported Mintage of only 5 and a Hefty Price Tag of over $5 Million Dollars. Usually a person thinks that a Million Coins of one specific Coin means that it should be a common find but in reality, there a tough find to get while out Detecting for Coins for certain Dates and Mint Marks. Common Coins have many Millions or Billions Minted like the 1919 Wheat Cent. This Coin is very Common due to having a few Hundred Million Minted in that Year. The less Mintage of a Coin, usually means a higher demand by Coin Collectors and also a nice Price Tag along with it. There is also Semi-Key Date Coins that are somewhat tough to find and they also have a bit higher Value than a Common Coin would. If not totally getting the picture, here is the Definition of Key Date. Key Date means Then Scarcest or Most Valuable Coin or Coins in a Series. I'm wishing it would rain to help the detecting. Wife is from N.D. and if I ever visit her home town where her family been for years, I'll have to take a machine or two, or three, or four, err, I'll have to find the time to say hello to her family.
