Only One Wheat, but.....

Hey everyone.

Its been raining almost everynight. Have gotten close to 4 inches since Monday. Makes it hard to put up hay. I tried out a new spot. I've been eyeing this place for a while now. It is a meeting/dance hall. It was built in 1904. I just stopped there tonight on my way home from a meeting and swung the E-Trac for a little over an hour. Just wondered around and got the "lay" of the subsoil targets. None of the coins were deeper than 6 or 7 inches. With all this moisture the numbers are way off. Silver sounds like wheats on one swing, then silvery on the next. Memorials are still all over the board for me....anywhere from a, typical memorial sound to a quarter sound depending on their depth. Moisture's throwing off the nickel sound too...a little lower and I didn't dig too many due to the large amount of pull tabs. Anyway, I called the caretaker and he gave me the o.k. so I was anxious to see what was there.

I'm happy to say the least. Pulled out the 1905 V, a 1910 wheat (didn't know it was a wheat until I got home) and my first silver dime trifecta. First came the 1939 Merc, then the 1952d Rosie and just a little ways from it the 1905s Barber. I think my main jinx in life right now is to scratch every other Barber I am to dig up. I'm going to use the excuse that it was in trash and with all the moisture it was difficult to get a good pinpoint. These are my 2,3, and 4th silver dimes this week and I think everyone of them has read 01-41 and 01-44 on at least half the swings. Ground was heavier than I'm used to also. Pretty black soil and the nickel shows it, its pretty red. Also found about a dozen memorials, 2 clad dimes and a "customized snuff can lid" with Butch's name on it....don't know how come I didn't scratch it???

I'm pretty excited about this area. Hope you guys are able to get able to get some good hunts in!

Nice finds. I am finally going to be able to get out tonight with a friend (V3i user) at a new spot. I have a ton of finds from the last 3 weeks to share, but I have been too lazy and/or busy to photograph and post.

Anyways, thanks for sharing. Posts like this keep my hopes up and my confidence high. E-Trac 4 life! :minelab:

Neb Trac, I used to scratch a lot on coins early on in my metal detecting days (been at it about 40 yrs). One friend nicknamed me Kenny the Gouger! But this friend gave me as a gift a plastic garden trowel so I would'nt scatch any more.
Now what i do, is dig the initial hole with the Lesche digger to cut the plug. Then I use the plastic trowel to dig the coin after pinpointing it with the Sunray X-1 probe. I rarely scratch a coin anymore. Just thought I would share this tipl

Congrats, Neb, on the silver dime trifecta!! :super: That's a great day, even though you only got one wheat.

That area definitely deserves to get worked at least a few times more...

Good Luck!!

Good hunt Neb!! Thanks for posting

Nice digs NebTrac and congrats on the trifecta! :clapping: I have the same experience as you with many deep silver / wheats, they read in weird 01-40 range, but they SOUND good. Glad to see you are ignoring the numbers when making that dig / no dig decision. - Jim

That was a great hunt for you... congrats! That site needs to be hit some more!

Very nice finds. Congratulations. My Etrac is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be posting some finds soon. I know I'll be asking some questions and needing advice here.

Thank you fellas! Its kind of fun when you hit an area probably 3 acres and just kindof do a circle around it and get these finds. There were a lot of dances here and drinking by the finds so maybe that helps some. Its about 45 min. from I live and only about 15 from church. So plan on hitting hit a number of times on some Sun. afternoons. Just wish there were some playground equipment for the kids. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the posts and looking!
