Out with the new x70 for about 45 min this morning....

When I got the new x70 Tuesday, I was busy and could spend only a few minutes looking it over. Around 2am that night (Wed Morning), it got the best of me and I just HAD to take it out in the yard to turn it on and give it a shot. Immediately, I popped a penny out of the ground, but it was like 21 degrees outside and I was QUICK about getting back inside. Planned to hunt an 1890's site tomorrow, but turns out that it's supposed to be a nasty, cold, blustery, wintry mix of a day tomorrow. :-( I went over to my mother and daddy's this morning, took the x70 with me and headed out to the back side of their place to detect for a few minutes while the sleet was coming down HARD. Found a few little odds and ends; and old sales tax token, a lock of some kind, two wheat pennies, and a whole bunch of trash. It's gonna take a while to learn the machine but I believe I will really like it once I do. It was a bit confusing at times for me today though. I seem to be getting the same signals for trash as well as the good stuff. Signals sound the same, numbers are the same.... Guess it'll just take some time to get used to this one and learn all about it.

Hello My Friend, Yes...it will take some time but one day soon you will have a really good idea of what's in the ground by the sound it makes and by the numbers on the screen. Be patient. You'll get it.

Pretty cold for down there. You will get the hang of it soon. :detecting::thumbup:

I like to use the four tones and listen for more of a zip-zip sound as I cross a target and don't pay to much attention to the numbers until you get more familiar with the machiine. It was confusing to me to begin with also.
God Bless,
HH Mark

I like to use four tones also, sometimes I notch out 32 as those numbers for me are almost always bottle caps. I had to use mine about two weeks before I really started getting the hang of it.

Lisa, you may want to go over to the X-Terra Forum where I spend most of my time. Look at posts by Digger, Goes4ever, and me David, and others. There is tons of info on the X-70 over there. You can learn it quicker there. I also have the same machine as you. Do not give up, you have a good metal detector.

Brrrrr....detecting in the sleet and cold weather is mighty brave of you and I know how it is to be anxious in getting out and trying one for the first time! It gets the best of our patience and sanity too quickly! May you learn fast and do well in finding lots of goodies IN WARMER WEATHER....I have found that detecting in wet and muddy or icy ground isn't very good because the beep singnals spread out over the top of the ground rather than narrowing down and pinpointing like they should and do in warm and soft ground that isn't too wet or too dry! May God Bless! Ma Betty

Very good Betty! I forgot to tell Lisa to look at the FAQFAQ (Frequenty Asked Questions) at the very top of the Minelab X-Terra Forum list of messages page. Lots of tips and advice there!

Thanks David! I wish I could still go detecting without tiring out so quickly, then I might get me a newer and better detector, but I still like my 1994 White's Spectrum XLT, for I have found some nice sillver and gold with it and lots of clad! But as little as I go out now, it wouldn't be worth buying a new one with my finances so low and my having Osteo-Arthritis and COPD.....get out of breath too easily and me poor ole bones ache too much, especially when out swingin' and a diggin' but I sure miss treasure hunting in the ground! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty

Ma Bettty, I have heard some of thoes older Whites machines are still very good and capable.

Lisa, I hunt pattern 1, 4 tones, Thresh 3 to 6, auto Noise Cancle and auto Ground Balance. Ground Balance in All Metal with your Sens set fairly low. Like maybe 9 to 13 or so.

I can usually run my Sensitivity between 20 and 25. Sometimes I will run lower in the trash to avoid target bleed. That became less of an issue with the 6" DD coil though. When cleaning out a hole I use All Metal so I don't disc out a good target.

Often pull tabs have a good number but a double beep or broken tone. Your good targets will repeat in at least one direction. Of course so does a lot of the trash I dig! I dig a lot of iffy signals. I figure I am still learning!

You may want to look in our manual and restore the factory presets to be sure you are starting from scratch.

Does the 70 have the atuo ground track?

Jeff
