Over 20" depth in Nebraska soil!

So, the weather was beautiful here today (50's), so I went to a site that was once a farmhouse/homestead in the 1800's. I had a weak signal and decided to flip over to deep on just to see if it would clarify the signal any and I had the picture below. The machine would null, then hit the 1-37 signal briefly (about two inches of swing, then null again. The depth gauge said that the tgt was at 12" or more. I did a quick mask and the signal was solid (didn't jump around) and the audio was sharp. The sun was going down and I had been out for a few hours, so I felt froggy enough to dig just to see how deep the tgt really was. Well, I dug until I could get my entire forearm in up to my elbow before I finall reached to top of the tgt and could touch it with my fingers. It felt like the edge of a can (maybe a bit "unraveled"?). I lost the sun, and the site is in what is now a park so a full size shovel was out of the question, so I had to cover it up again. I can't help but wonder if this could be a coffee can with some silver in it...I've heard stories about how they used to bury their stash because they didn't trust banks and didn't want to get robbed.
I was only able to detect about 10 yards before I hit that tgt, so I'll be back there when the weather is warm again next weekend. Any ideas from you pros on what the signal could be?

Thanks
Shawn

EDIT: Forgot to add that BarberDan gave me the link toGoes4Ever's site and I was using the setting that he (Goes4Ever) recommended (I know, I'm a new E Etrac guy and I should just use the turn on and go method until I understand the machine, but what better way to learn than to try different things, right?). Thanks BarberDan for the recommendation, and Goes4Ever for the great advice on settings and the videos (huge help for an ET noob like me!).

Sensitivity Auto +3
Threshold limit just barely audible
Volume limit 29
Volume gain 29
Response normal
Tone ID multi
Sounds conductive
Varability 29
Limits 29
Threshold pitch 28-29
Deep off (but I switch to on for a second to break the target out a bit)
Fast on
Trash high
Ground difficult
I noise canceled at the site before starting

Wow dont that drive you nuts that you couldnt get it out of the hole to see what it was!.......I would have dug it to see what it was too!

It this was the size of a coffe can, I have no doubts you could get the signal that deep. If you could touch the top, why did you cover it back up?

I really don't know if it was a coffee can...could have been a smaller can. I think it was maybe tilted, but I really don't know. I know that the accuracy of a machine decreases as you exceed it's limits. All I could feel was a piece of the rim. I had no way to get it dug any deeper as I was using a Lesche (I was as deep as I could dig without enlarging the entire hole, and I was in a park...I don't think it would have went over well). It was almost dark anyway, so the best option was to refill the hole. I marked the coords off on my GPS for later investigation.

Yeah, it might be best to wait a while for the ground to "heal" then go back for another shot.

One thought, if you have manmade stuff that deep, this park probably has fill dirt. Fill dirt means that old coins could be very hard to find depending on the depth of fill for each area.

Welcome to the world of the E-Trac! Should I dig that signal? Dang it's deep, there's roots in the way, the numbers are iffy but the sound is good but it's so darn deep! I think I'll just keep going, no I should dig it, and on it goes.

@ Jason: The outline for the foundation of the house and barn are still visable, so I don't think there si fill dirt over it. I have seen exactly what you are talking about before though and it sure can be a pain when that heppens!

@Badjim: The picture I attached to the post is after I dug the target and the rim was exposed. That is why it was so hard to walk away from!

@ Sailorman: For sure! I think I have spent more time digging than swinging with the Etrac. Hopefully I'll learn how to ID a beit better as time goes by :pulltab:
