Penny signal = .925 Silver ?

Got out Saturday afternoon for a little bit of detecting at a baseball field in one of the parks here in town.

Dug a lot of junk and a little bit of clad and found the .925 Cross that rang up as a penny. The cross rang up at 12-35 and was within the roots of the plug. Not sure why it would ahve rang up as a penny and I did rescan the area after I pulled the cross and there were no other targets to be found.

I've been checking the outfield at this ballpark, as it used to be a private dump back in the early days of our town.

12-35 is a tweener reading on my E-trac. Non-buried IH cents typically come in around 12-32 or 12-33, those pesky Zinc cents come in at 12-37 and 12-38. Closest I have to 12-35 is a square tab from a pop can. Some trade tokens come in around there as well. In reality, you never know until you dig it.

Is it reading the same now? Perhaps it was positioned vertical in the ground.

I did run it over the coil after it was out and got the same. Thought it was pretty wierd, but then I ran it past my buddies Fisher F75 and it registered as copper as well on his machine.

Oh well, I'll take it as silver since that is what it's marked.

Shape & size...
That's why we dig lots of stuff that ends up being junk...
& lots of junk that ends up being treasure...
Because a good thing may not be shaped like a silver dime or quarter...
Like the way a detector engineer calibrated that amout of silver to read...
Even though it has the same amount of silver...or just a little bit more or less, depending...
Have you ever dug a worn silver dime that got hit by a lawn mower?
That too could possibly read like an indian head...
When in doubt, dig that thing out...
The more junk we dig, the more treasure we tend to find
& the more knowledge we gain about the language of signals & their probability...

Thats a very nice find DGH! Thanks for the great pictures too!

Size matters:wiggle:

nice find! Silver hammered coins in the UK are around about that reading

Thanks all for the replies.

Just thought it a bit strange to ring up in the copper VDI, but then nothing is 100% when it comes to targets and readings.
