Personal best for Silver in a year broke this past Labor Day Weekend. 330 and counting.....:jump:

Hello everyone again! I've just got done with the finds I found this past Labor Day Weekend. There was quite a bit of stuff recovered again and there would have been more but chose to take Monday off from detecting so I could get other things done such as the last post and a few other things. It's been one terrific year on Silver and would have never dreamed of surpassing or even coming close to my personal best in 1 season but this year I matched it and surpassed it which is just AWESOME!!! My personal best for Silver stood at 323 Silver which I got 2 years ago. I have now matched that total and surpassed it last Sunday and now am sitting at 330 Silver For The Year......so far! I hope to continue doing well until freeze-up but only time will tell and the sites I come across. I just hope everyone is having a good if not a great year on finds and I thank you for being a part of this and hope you enjoy the finds.

Friday, I got off early and decided to go try out some local Road Construction again since I have been getting a few goodies from there. I hunted for about 6 hours or so and was able to come up with 1 Merc, 1 Rosie, a 50c All You Can Eat Comstock Hotel Token from Moorhead, Minn., a Mom's Kitchen/Spark's Family Amusement Token, 15 Wheaties with 2 being better ones (13-d & 22-d), a Key, a Religious Pendant, a Brass Pipe, 5 National Republican Congressional Committee Pins (all found in about a 3' area), a James E. Pepper Pendant/Medallion and one of the smallest Sterling Silver Baby Rings I have ever found. Luckily.....this was in the same hole as a Wheatie and at first I thought it was one of them annoying Aluminum Shirt Buttons but was pleasantly surprised that it was a Baby Ring that is quite old. There is a pic of it sitting Vertical and laying Flat along side a Silver Dime to show you how small it is. That was one of the neatest finds I have gotten for awhile and just happy to have been able to recover it. Also, I dug some Clad Coins in the process which included 5 Quarters, 11 Dimes, 1 Nickel and 48 Pennies along with the normal Junk.

Friday Night, I e-mailed Rick(ND) to see if he wanted to meet up and hit some boulevards on Saturday Morning. He contacted me and told me sure so we hunted together on Saturday.
We were finding a few Wheats and the normal Clad Coins and at first it was pretty dead for oldies. Rick took one side of the block and I took the other. I found 2 Wheaties right off the bat and Rick got one about 1/4th the way down the block. We continued hunting and hunted for a few hours with minimal finds but it was just fun to get out with Rick and detect with an ole friend for once and to try and help him find a few more goodies since it's hard for him to find new sites to go detecting at.

Anyways, I come across the end of the block and decided to go down the side street here. I got a little ways down it and popped out 3 Wheats, a Merc and an Aluminum Token. I stopped and went to see how Rick was doing. He had only found 1 other Wheatie so far and a bunch of New Coins. I then told him I just hit a spot and told him what I got. I then told him the main reason for me inviting him along was for him to find some keepers and then told Rick that he could hunt the rest of the boulevard where I pulled them finds from. We headed over to that spot and Rick starts detecting. He wasn't finding much but a few New Coins and then he came across a signal that was next to the sidewalk and heard him say "it's probably the sidewalk" and then continues on. I was standing there watching him detect since I wanted him to find something good before he left and decided I better turn on my detector and see what he thought was the sidewalk signal. I checked it and it was very choppy and I figured it had to be re-bar or something in the sidewalk as well. I then turned around and decided to start off where Rick started just to make sure he didn't leave anything behind. I come across a section of grass that had some kind of cut in it, like it was made from a leg from a Backhoe. I got a signal here and it showed about 2" Deep. I called to Rick and asked why he was passing up Coins? He was surprised that he missed one and I was too. I told him that it was most likely a New Coin but he should dig it just to make sure. What happened next was UNBELIEVABLE!!!! He got down and started digging for it. I wasn't paying much attention at the time when he was digging so I had no idea what he found. He get up and then I asked what he had found. He replies back "a Silver Quarter"! I told him B.S.!!! He then told me that I put it there. I then told Rick that I didn't put that Quarter there and that he found it! He still doubted me and I frantically kept telling him that I would never go a bury a Coin on someone just so they can find it. I looked up into the sky and I said to myself, "I just can't catch a break! What are the odds of that happening.....especially with a Silver Quarter!". I asked Rick if the Quarter was full of dirt and he replied "yes". He then told me that I must have found it and then buried it for him to find. I again pleaded with Rick that I would never do a thing like that to him and that if I would have known it was going to be a Silver Quarter or a Quarter for that matter, I would have dug it myself. I then told Rick that it was 100% found by him and he should be happy he found one. You see....the thing is Rick hasn't found a Silver Quarter in like 3 years so this was a special find for him and now you know why I couldn't believe in all the places that a Silver Quarter would be sitting right where a slice was in the grass. We then decided to keep hunting since Rick had to leave in a bit so I went over across the road to hunt. I got over there and pulled 2 Wheats as soon as I started hunting. I then turned off my machine and told Rick he could have that also since I wanted him to find a few more keepers before he left. He pulled up 2 more Wheaties and one of them was next to the sidewalk. A home owner come out of his house pretty mad and started screaming at Rick "What the hell do you think your doing!" Well, Rick couldn't hear him since he wears Hearing Aids but this guy didn't know this. He then yelled again at Rick the same question and luckily for me I was only 2-3 houses down and started walking that way. I replied to him he was looking for Coins! The home owner jumped back a bit since I startled him and didn't know what to say. He then told me it was Private Property. I told him from the Street to the Sidewalk is City Property and then pointed out that the New Curb And Gutter Height was a lot lower than what the Grass and Dirt was so I then told him that the Construction Company would be bringing in a Skid-Steer sometime and scraping off the top so it was level with the Curb and Gutter. I then told him I know this for a fact since I work Construction also and that he had nothing to worry about since we were just trying to find whatever Coins were lost before they did this. He then replied back after thinking a moment and said "well....you just never know what's going on out in front of these houses anymore", and I told him I agreed and apologized for any mis-understanding and that we didn't mean to startle him. I then told him to have a nice day and he then replied to me the same and went back into the house. After this was done, Rick stands up and shows me a Padlock he found and tells me he just found a Wheatie. We then got about half a block away and I stopped Rick. I told Rick that guy was really peeved off and Rick then asks "What Guy???" I then said "you didn't see that guy yelling at you or didn't hear him?" Rick replies, "No!". I then said, "you had to have seen him going back into the house when you were getting up?" Rick replies, "no!". I started laughing since Rick had no idea that he was getting into trouble and would have never known this if I didn't tell him. He kinda chuckled about it also since he didn't even know that it happened. Anyways, we walked over to Rick's Car and Rick pulled out his finds. He had a Silver Quarter (which he did find and he should be very happy with it), a few Wheats, a Padlock and a bunch of New Coins. I'm just glad he got that Quarter and hopes that someday he will believe that he found that and I never planted it for him. My finds were a Clock Key, a Crystal White Token, an Aluminum Token Good For $1.00 at some Bank, a Merc, a Canadian Penny dated 1947 and around 12 or so Wheats.

I later went back and hit another section and retrieved a Car Key, 2 Marbles, a Crushed Thimble, a Billiard Hall Token, a few more Wheats and a Silver Rosie. For New Coins on Saturday, I dug another 8 Quarters, 13 Dimes, 1 Nickel and 81 Pennies along with more Junk like Lead, Copper, Brass and Aluminum Whatzits.

Sunday, I decided to Road Trip by myself. First site I tried was a Football Field that looks pretty old and doesn't get used much if any anymore. I hunted this for about an hour and found a few Wheats and a badly corroded 1907 Indian Head Penny.

I then decided to go try the Park since I pulled out some goodies from here a few weeks back. I hunted this for about an hour or so and found a couple Wheats, 2 Mercury Dimes and an Indian Head Penny that was under a tree about 2" Deep that was dated 1889. I then decided to go try and find a Ball Field that Tim had mentioned to me before. I then left town to see if I could find it.

I come across it and to one side was a large Park. I pulled in after debating about stopping and decided to try it out. I never tried out the Park area so that will have to wait. I started hunting along one side of the Ball Field. I pulled out a 1915 Wheatie and thought perhaps there could be Barber any minute. I hunted the outside of this for a good 2 hours or so and pulled up a Silver Quarter, a few Merc's, a Rosie and another 1907 Indian Head. I also found a really Old Crushed Sterling Silver Ring on the outside of the fence. I then decided to go try in the Ball Field. Immediately I started to pull up Wheats from here. I then hunted this for at least 2 hours and was able to pull up 2 more Silver Quarters, a few more Merc's, a couple more Rosie's, and a bunch more Wheats. I still had about an hour and a half left before it got dark out but when I found that 3rd Quarter, I figured I better quit since if I found anymore that some would think I was lying and besides, it leaves me a great spot to start at this weekend. Finds on Sunday were a Sterling Silver Ring, 27 Wheats, 3 Indian Heads, 3 Silver Quarters, 7 Merc's and 4 Silver Rosie's. Not a bad haul once again! For New Coins, I dug a ton of Quarters. I couldn't believe the amount of Quarters here and I was digging every Coin I come across too. I eventually gave up on the New Coins and focused on the Deeper Hits. Anyway, I dug 41 Quarters, 33 Dimes, 5 Nickels and 64 Pennies. Now that's a lot of Quarter!!!!

Monday, I took off from detecting to relax and post the weekend before this finds. Bet some of you are shocked I was able to take a day off.....aren't you?

Totals are as follows. Silver Total for the weekend was 18 and they included 3 Silver Washington Quarters dated 1939-s,1945,1962-d, 9 Mercury Dimes dated 1917,1920-s,1924-d,1942-d (double die obverse, would scan it but wouldn't show in pic),1943,1944,1944-d,(2)1945-d and 6 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1950-s,1953-d,1957-d,1958-d,1959-d and 1964-d. Madsen Billiard Hall Token, an All You Can Eat 50c Comstock Hotel / Good Luck Moorhead, Minn. Wheaties totalled another 62 more and they are dated 11,13-d,14,15,16-d,18,(3)19,20,22-d,23,25-s,27-d,28,(2)28-d,(3)29-d,3?,30,(2)30-d,34-d,35-d,36,38-d,38-s,39,40-d,(3)41,42-s,(2)44,44-d,44-s,(2)45-d,45-s,46,(3)46-d,46-s,(3)47-d,48-d,(3)51-d,53-d,54-d,55-d,56,56-d,57 and (2)58-d. Misc. Finds included 2 Car Keys, a Clock Key, a Brass Pipe, 2 Marbles, a Crushed Thimble that reads Star Brand Shoes Are Better, a Religious Pendant that reads O-Mary Conceived Without Sin Pray For Us Who Have Recourse To Thee, a James E. Pepper Born With The Republic Est. 1780 / James E. Pepper The Choice Of Generation After Generation Est. 1780 Pendant / Medallion, a Crushed Sterling Silver Ring, a Sterling Silver Baby Ring with M-H after Sterling and 5 2005 National Republican Congressional Committee Pins. New Coin Count was 54 Quarters, 57 Dimes, 7 Nickels and 192 Pennies = $21.48 in Clad. Not too bad! That does it for this post and hope you all enjoyed the read and the finds. May you all get out this weekend and pull some nice keepers from that ground. Good Luck and HH! When I was a kid we used to get to the FM area once or twice a year (about a hundred and twenty miles away)
and always liked the all you can eat Comstock Hotel. I've found a few of the Crystal Wite tokens also. Good hunt,
lots of goodies.

Had a very simular experience with a homeowner just the other day James. The results were
the same with the homeowner saying to have a good day. Some of them really get irate and
vocal until they understand what we are doing. Anyway, Congrats to you and Rick on some
good finds and a great story. You have done real good on silver coins this year and hope you
manage to find more before it freezes up. It's not too far away now. Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

Nice finds James.Congrats on the record braking weekend . That's most likely a worlds record also. You amaze me. I don't think that I've ever hunted for more than 2 or 3 hours at a time.
Wish that I could though. HH and best of luck.GR

purchase one of them Comstock Hotel Tokens on Ebay the other day and glad I didn't. You just never know what a person will find when hunting them boulevards. Thanks for the reply and Good Luck and HH to you.:detecting:

wishes they could hunt more than a few hours at a time. It's one of them things that comes with being a bachelor so I can go out and play when I want too. Thanks for the reply GR. Hope you get out more and make some nice finds again. Good Luck and HH to you when you do!:detecting:

again! It's really fun hitting them boulevards when there is road construction going on so if you ever come across any, give them a try. You'll be amazed at what's in them. Thanks for the response and Good Luck and HH to you.:detecting:

situation also turned out to be positive also. It was fun seeing Rick find that Quarter the other day but sure wish that it would have been lost somewhere else, then he would have realized that it was a genuine find. Problem with this is that others have buried things on him before so this is why he is skeptical on things like this. Anyways, thanks for the response Gold Nuggets and I will be out tomorrow trying to get more Silver before freeze-up comes around the corner. Good Luck and HH to you also.:detecting:

Truly amazing James! Spectacular assortment. Have you thought about filming and posting these hunts? I would subscribe. great job! JJ

It would be really fun to capture something like that on video and I and Tim have chatted about doing something like that sometime. It sure would open up a lot of people's eyes if they seen the recoveries on film and would be a fun thing to do. Thanks for the response and the great question. I'll keep this in mind and maybe sometime I and another person will do this. Good Luck and HH to you and may you find a spot that yields a ton of goodies also. :detecting:

Nice finds once again James.:clapping: Now I know why you get to go out and hunt those long weekends. You don't have to answer to a nagging wife. HH.

Eddie

I couldn't even fathom 330 silver coins in a year. Congrats and hope you get well past 400

Even though it didn't produce a lot of silver or older coins it was fun to get out with you again. I just wish others had a chance to hunt with you and pick up some tips from you as you and Tim as you guys do good and can find coins others walk over, but that is because you know your Minelabs and have the best there is..
I wish I had the time and my health was better as going all day like you and Tim do brings back some great memories from the 70s when I would do this all day long also and miss doing this like I used too. When you get old and wore out it is still lot of fun, but just can't do it all day any more as getting up off the ground it getting to be tough after a while.

Thanks James

Rick

that you were having a bit of trouble getting up and down and can see what your talking about. If you could detect a whole day like Tim and I, we would most certainly bring you along so you could have a great day of detecting for once and bring home a bunch of keepers instead of the norm that you get now days. Wish you were in better health buddy! I'll keep you posted on any other construction that I come across and hopefully it will be virgin still when we get to it. Thanks for the reply Rick. It's always fun hunting with you. Good Luck and HH to you.

dig all the targets I do and hope everyone realizes this when they are out hunting. Lots of Clad is dug along with Junk so it just isn't the goodies I'm digging. I bet this round of finds took me a good 24-26 hours of hunt time to make these finds. Glad you liked the finds again Stubbs1 and hope you hit a honey-hole of your own soon. Good Luck and HH to you.:detecting:

that will get you the amount of Silver that one seeks. Lots of these spots that I have hit this year have been the normal Parks, Fairgrounds, Ball Diamonds, Etc. so the sites do exist......you just have to bust your butt and find out which sites are the untouched ones. It's been one heck of a year so far and hope to hit 400 Silver. #1 on my list is getting a Barber Half since I haven't gotten one in 2 years I believe and Tim's gotten 3 already this year so that's the #1 thing on my list for now. Thanks for the response Montanagold. Hope you find a spot out your way that holds a bunch of goodies for you on your next trip out. Good Luck and HH!:detecting:
