On a side note....

I hate it when your hunting along and somebody sneaks up on you cause you have the headphones on and cant hear over the threshold. I had a not so nice looking mexican do that to me the other day while i was on my knees digging. Scared the crap out of me when I went to stand up and there he was standing over me trying to look in my hole. Did i mention it was a crappy part of town with painted gang signs on the trees and fences???

Why I always carry a VERY sharp knife.

I know what you mean. I have been there myself a few times. You are so wrapped up in finding your target, you fail to see the person come up behind you. I finally started packing a subcompact 9mm (I have my concealed handgun license) when I hunt the seady parts of town by myself.

Hey Stoopstroops, I suggest that when in the more undesirable parts of town, that you turn your threshold as low as you can and still hear it. Also, hunt with at least one or more buddies! Every find and equipment you have can be replaced, not your life.:goodnight: Happy Hunting Grounds,

Savage.

I know of many old parks that are in crappy neighborhoods that probably hold tons of Silver. Maybe a couple armed bodygaurds covering my back whilst I make away with the goods.

Can't carry a pistol, or any other weapon in Australia...

Unless you are a criminal,
( they can get hold of what ever they need.)

The 26 is a sweet choice, MassSandman. I carry a Springfield XD Sub-Compact.

Sorry to hear about your laws, SNOWY. I'm glad the State of Texas allows their citizens the right to apply for a license to carry a concealed handgun.

A few years ago I was challenged by 3 crack slingers in a park.
Was down on my knees digging under some roots when I noticed the shadows coming up on me. I immediately stood up and could tell by the looks on their faces what they had in mind and it wasn't to say hello.

They looked to be in their early 20's at best, the biggest of the bunch had face piercings and tats all over him and a grill full of gold.
Bro ... we gonna take your stuff he said ... while the other 2 started making their way around my backside. I reached up with my razor sharp lesche shovel and sliced a 3" thick limb clean off the tree we were standing under.
The look on their faces was priceless, the 2 that were just closing in on me started backing way off. The big boy started going for his saturday night special but it was hung up inside his baggy pants. I beat him to the draw with that shovel ... right to his shoulder .. flat side up and very hard too.
I heard a YELL, looked up and spotted a county deputy walking towards us at a fast pace while unstrapping his gun.
Within a minute or so he had the big boy in cuffs and the other 2 in tie wraps face down in the dirt.
2 more county cars showed up by the time I had gathered my equipment and walked with the deputy to the parking lot.
2 of the boys were already wanted for failing to appear in court for drug charges and the other one had several vials of crack and a wad of cash on him when they checked his pockets.

The deputy told me FIRMLY that I should NOT be in that particular area alone and if I insisted on coming there to at least come armed and preferably with friends so we could watch out for each other.
I told him that "normally" I never have any problems but that little voice inside me said "take your gun today" so I did.
He said .. oh you ARE armed ? I said "yes sir" and that I just didn't feel like it was time to pull my weapon, not yet anyway, and I sure didn't want to kill anybodys kid.
He motioned me towards the back of the cruiser and asked to see the weapon. I pulled it out butt first and handed it to him, he looked it over real good, opened the door of the cruiser, showed them the 410/45 derringer and said .... see there boys, you were all lucky this man didn't shot you dead!
He handed the gun back to me and said Sir ... be careful out there.
He never once asked me my name, if I had a pistol permit, if I wanted to press charges or anything.
About a month later one of these same boys made the evening news.He had been shot dead by a little old lady after braking into her house to rob her. She shot him with a double barrel 12 gauge.
This old world has become mean and nasty, be careful out there folks.

Hi Mike,

A very good story,,I love happy endings, as Snowy said us poor sods in Australia are not allowed to defend ourselves at least not with a pistol, I have been a competition pistol shooter for about 20 years but I'm still not permitted to carry unless I'm off to the range. One wonders if I could say the while on the way to the pistol range I decided to do a little metal detecting.
Oh well it might be worth a try. A local saying is it's better to be tried by twelve of your peers, than carried out by six of your mates.

Regards...Boony

A real good reason to hook up with a buddy while we are out there with our valuable gear...

I only found out a few months ago that even a closed fist is also coincided an offencive weapon under our laws. How pathetic is that! I guess the best solution, would be to train A flock of Magpies to be 'In season' to anybody else but you and have them follow you around. Love to see a copper try and convict you on that one!
Mick Evans.

I wonder if they'd try to charge him with carrying such an "offensive" looking device or inciting some sort of gang violence.
From a detecting perspective , it'd be okay with me or many others who understand BUT lets think from a non detecting bystanders point of view. Would you approach a person with such an offensive looking bunch of seagulls perched on up there on this coil carrier.....I think not(probably run the other way actually:rofl:) Hey if it helps..............
Rest assured, I'm sure the Aussie police will find something that MAY look or be offensive about it. especially the ones here in Perth WA.
