phantom holes WAHT THE HECK,:ranting:

The signal on the e-trac sounds good . Now I am in coin mode {factory} the signal is scratchy and somewhat inconsistent but when I switch to quickmask the sound comes in loud and clear and fr#20s con#44-47 the pinpoint is right on but when I dig a treasure it not their..... Please help anyone thx

When you say it is not there do you mean nothing is there or that there is not a coin there. With a 20-44-47 reading I would be suprised if it was a coin, now it could be but most often it won't be. Most likely a rusted piece of iron. If your pinpoint it a bit to one side of where you would think it would be by the signal, I can almost promise you it is trash. Now there are exceptions to this at times. Do you have a hand held pinpointer?

I believe your experiencing iron falsing. There is something big a lot deeper, on edge off to the side (yes that will pinpoint differently) or something very minute. Those little "rivet discs" off of jeans will come in like a 6" IH at times and you dig down 4" and nothing on the probe. Dig down another 2" and still nothing. Gets frustrating when you tear the darn plug apart and find one of the little buggers

I think Neb hit the rusty old nail on the head.

In short...TIME. You'll just learn how to tell what your detector is trying to say is down there. Most, and I want to emphasize MOST sites will not have good targets that fall in that FE 20-27 range. I have found about 7 or 8 out of 300+ old coins that have hit there. There is one park that I hunt, that I'll dig "everything" that has a consistant signal...even one way, mainly because I dig a lot of falsing type signals at each site just to see whats down there. Another site, (where I did most of the filming) just hasn't given me anything good with Fe's in the 20's. Rusty staples, Barbwire (I thought that was a ghost signal also, was around 12" down on off to the side). For some reason rusty bent nails, fencing staples, barb wire, etc. generally will be off to the side....even when you seem to get a descent pinpoint and can take some time to pinpoint.

If you can. The next time that happens keep widening your hole (undercutting if you have to - to keep it nice) until you can find the target.

I do have some video that I haven't loaded up yet, where I find a good target in among falsing. I try to the best of my ability to help myself and others on that learning curve. I just wish I could duplicate EXACTLY the sound on the screen as I hear in the headphones. When I pull the plug for the camera, the "sweet" sound isn't quite there, coming from the speaker.

NebTrac

NebTrac covered it pretty well.

Your first clue should be that it's a very "rough" signal, but becomes much stronger in all-metal. That doesnt mean it's NOT a coin, but it certainly lowers the chances.
Second, this sounds like a classic nail or wire target. The signal seems to radiate outward from the point of long targets. So a nail at an angle (and they are almost always at an angle) will sound good and pinpoint good. When you dig, there is nothing. If you probe the sides in all metal, you will probably find it.
Lastly, it could be a much deeper iron target. When you start digging, you disrupt the rust "halo" and the target gets ignored like it should have originally.

And those stupid little tiny rivets! GGRRRR!! They will exactly like a good target at 6 inches. We hates them my precious!

A few digs ago I couldn't find a target in the 12-32 range. Being stuborn I was determined to find something. Turned out to be an old bullet casing that crumbled into a tiny tiny fragment. I guess when I dug out the plug I destroyed it. This happens:(
