In the mid-eighties I owned a Whites 6000D. There was a button on the handle which would put you in "pin-point" mode. If you hit the button 2 or three times it would de-sensitize the coil so that only the center of the coil was active and you could really PIN-POINT your target. Along comes my E-trac and after having it for a year I inadvertently hit the pin-point button 2 or 3 times and this seemed to do the same thing as my Whites. I repeatedly tried this and for me it works. The trick is to have the coil over (not directly over) the target when you hit the pin-point button a few times. If done correctly---at least with my machine--the only time you will hear a response from your target is when the center of the coil is directly over the target. If you hit the pin-point button (repeatedly) when the center of the coil is directly over your target you will get no response at all in pin-point mode. Then you just go back to search mode and try it over again. This may be old news to most of you--I checked old posts but could not find this referenced anywhere. Well if I helped out at least one person struggling with pin-pointing it was worth the post. I think Neb-Trac or Goesforever made a video on their pin-pointing technique which works well also.
