Pinpointers

all iron

Thinking about buying a pinpointer.
Any recommendations?

The Garrett and the pistol probe have my attention

All Iron, I think either one would make you an excellent pin pointer, you wont read much at all bad about either one of them.I personally use the Garrett Pro pointer and im totally happy with it.....Markmac

I agree, I love my propointer. I used a centec one for over 2 years and that worked well for me too then I moved up. What a difference between the two!!!!

I have a Garrett and it has saved me time, coins and made hunting just more efficient.
The size is an important factor for me.

I have the pistol probe but thinking about a Garrett.........Pistol probe is hot up the barrell as well as the tip making it hard to locate the target at times.

Believe it or not I use both. But the ProPointer is the one I'd never want to be without. The Pistol Probe has a several inch depth advantage so it occasionally comes in handy when I cut a flap plug and can't find the target with the ProPointer.

The Garrett is a lot more sturdy and convenient too. The Pistol Probe is big and awkward. Despite being careful, about a month ago I broke the Pistol Probe where the barrel connects to the handle. I glued it back together with a couple layers of Goop automotive sealant and layered over that with Gaffers tape and it's held up so far, but I figure it's just a matter of time. When it breaks again I don't think I'd invest in another.

Thanks for that. It was between the two you mentioned for me and I'm glad I went with the smaller and more durable unit. The Pistol Probe I heard is deep. But, the Garret can get double the depth it has by using the coin up the side trick. You can find it on another forum here, think the Garret?

I'd choose the Pistol Probe over the Garrett. I have a Pocket Uniprobe and I have a Garrett. The Uniprobe, which is what the Pistol Probe evolved from is far better than the Garrett Pro pinpointer. The Garrett signals from both the sides and from the end and does not have the depth of the Uniprobe. The Pistol Probe, if it is as good as the Uniprobe has a tight signal right out of the tip and will signal most coins to about 4"... i've never had a problem with it not finding something. Now and then you may have to dig out a nail or something else but both pinpointers do that. The Pistol Prbe is just deeper and much more focused.

Also the Garrett will interfere with the F75 11" coil when it is off and in its holder on your hip (not sure about the T2 or Omega 11" coils) because the coils are tuned the same. If it is on it will not interfere... actually it is probably only a problem with the LTDs or Special Editions that run in BP or CL because the coils are so sensitive.

The Pistol Probe has an adjustable frequency and will make some machines chatter but most of it can be tuned out. Multi frequency machines are the worst about chattering with the Pistol Probe or uni-probe but it really isn't a problam if you use good headphones with a mono/stereo switch, just switch it over when you're pinpointing and the detector stops coming through the phones... no problem... and i've never had a problem hearing the pocket uniprobe through my phones.

The Pistol Probe is maybe twice the size of the Garrett and that makes it twice as easy to find when you leave it in the leaves in the woods... painting either one orange isn't a bad idea... but the Pocket Uniprobe did not have this problem because you keep the box clipped to your pocket or belt. It was the best probe and I hope they start making it again.

BTW, I also have an S-1 inline probe for my SovereignGT but I use the Uniprobe or the Garrett befor the S-1. The S-1 and the Garrett are about equal in depth and the UP is deeper... and IDing a target with the probe (which you can do with a SunRay probe) is unnecessary in my experience... plus, I don't know... the UP just works better for me.

The Garrett is hot all along the barrell too. I have not had this problem with the Pocket Uniprobe... I don't like it signalling along the barrel either.

I bet DetectorPro will fix it for free if you send it in. They have fixed two wands for me that I have had for a long time... no charge. They stand behind their products.

I had the pistol probe. Didn't like how big it was, takes two batteries, Have to mess with sensitivity. I returned it and got the Garrett. Mine didn't detect much deeper than the Garrett. I love the Garrett.

I would have to agree with the Garrett. It was a little higher than I wanted to spend, but I now think it is one of my best purchases for this hobby.

It is much more durable than my last one, which was a White's Bullseye.

I see there are more than one Garrett

Garrett Pro-Pointer Pinpointing Metal Detector 127.00

Garrett CSI Pro-Pointer Pinpointing 169.00

I bought the one for $127

What's the difference between the two Garrett's? I use the Vibra probe and I'm not impressed with the depth. I like the sensitivity only being at the tip but it makes the T2 chatter when it's on & will drive you nuts. If it were a deeper seeker I'd continue to use it but I'm considering the Garret Pro pointer myself since everyone says it doesn't interfere with the T2 & has better depth.

Garrett for me, I have to adjust my T2 to freq 6 to eliminate the chatter but it has good depth and very convenient to carry in the provided holster.
