Pitch Mode

spimly

New member
In all the post on here there is little to no mention of the Pitch mode that can be found on the Expert menu of the Discriminate menu. It says in the manual: "It does not take into account the target's conductivity: the strength of the signal generates an audio signal that varies both in volume and frequency. This means a more distant target will generate a low-frequency, weak sound whereas a closer target will generate a high-frequency, strong sound". This sounds like it could be used for pinpointing but then we have a pinpointing mode in the non-motion menus.
Given that Alain has only put into this machine what we really need, what could have been his thought for including this feature?

Has anyone found a use for Pitch?

HI,
according to me pitch mode is actually a good way to dig on every sounds, because the pitch mode doesn't let you the choice to understand the sound by hearing it, you can just use the VID but I don't think this is a good way to hunt with this mode. One more thing is that sounds are clearer than 2/3/4 tones on a target, it's good or not, so if it's good, with you're chosen discrimination, dig and dig again; it could be great to just focus on solid sounds without asking yourself if it's a good or a bad target.... it's an other way to metal detect.
at last, you can use this mode as an another pinpoint.

A bient

I use it to pinpoint targets. Works great.

I use pitch mode quite a bit in the heavy iron. My ears find it easier to pick non ferrous targets out of the mix.

Terry,

How do you differentiate between iron and non-iron in this mode? The manual states: "It does not take into account the target's conductivity" and goes on to say that it is the strength of the signal that produces the volume and tone. To me, that says that the machine is in all-metal mode. Am I wrong?

I tried pitch for about an hour today in ungodly heavy iron and trash. Any way you look at this type site is a dig it all proposition period. I ran the disc up to around 45 and dug it all. Dug about 6 coins like that. No iron sound to contend with, and there was a LOT! Just conductive targets above the discrimination setting. I can see where this is a very useful way to hunt myself. I will use it again and probably raise the disc a little more. It's still deep that way. A superb way to relic hunt in heavy iron if you ask me.

x2 what treebeard just said. If its real heavy iron Ill drop the disc down to 2.1 -2.3. This will knock out all your square nails(soil dependent) Anything from that setting to approx 6 ish is usually bigger iron. everything that comes in below the disc setting will give the standard iron tone. You can still use your iron volume to turn the iron tones down. Everything else will give the non-ferrous tone. When I get a signal Ill sweep it several times to see if the numbers will jump at least into the 20's, and if it does then dig it out. This is the setting I use in pounded field sites with high iron content and limited non-ferrous targets using a spade to dig, Id never run this way in a park/yard setting or digging by hand digger
I use Pitch mode approx 50% of the time. It can be highly effective in heavy iron(even in shallow water around decayed docks and old swim holes filled with bobby pins) and yet its unpopular with alot of Deus users. Pitch mode can surprise you in the way it "bleeds" the non ferrous out of the ferrous, but it can be a tough way to hunt and its not for everyone.
I like it, and hope its still included in the 3.0 update

PS, my other tweaks .... reactivity 3(sometimes 4), sens 95-99(if it can be run that high), disc 2.1, GB=tracking (my soil reads in the upper 80's, if the ground reading was lower Id try a manual/pump spot-on GB) audio vol=3, iron vol=2. And sometimes drop the silencer 1 or 2 points.

Hey...does this "pitch" mode on the Deus relate in any way to my question on Jan 2nd about tones? Man..I just gotta try one of these things out.
Mud

Thanks guys,

Great input! This seems to be another case of a bad manual translation from French because I certainly didn't get how you are using this mode from what I read. I have only had a chance to get out with my Deus once because it was a Xmas present and here in NH that means playing with it inside until the snow melts - can't wait. Until then I am trying to soak up all the wisdom I can. I will definitely have to try this mode out around some iron infested cellar holes to see how it works for me.

I have to agree with Terry the pitch tone is really nice picking small conductive targets out of iron patches. I like Deus fast with Pitch tones, low disc, iron volume 2 and ground balance manual a few points negative. It will really get those highly masked targets. I also like it when in Basic 1 for digging old sites with a layer of new targets on top. The Pitch tones makes it easy to pick out the older deep targets. It kinda reminds me of using a G2 or Goldbug but you have the option of an Iron volume.
