I've never done this before but it sounds like an interesting hobby ( for a retired sch. teacher ).
I'm considering the ACE 250.

Is this a good starting / basic model? Is it wise to start with the ACE 250 or should I jump into a higher priced model and 'grow-into' it.

are the top models more accurate? easier to use? do some people get a 250 and just stay with it?

250 or up?

I would appreciate any comments as I am completely new to this?

The Ace. It's always easier to go up if you find it's your cup of tea. My best friend who introduced me to the hobby 40 years ago always had the best of equipment but never got serious about it. I, on the other hand, am totally NUTS about the hobby and STILL use the Ace! I mean what does it take to find a coin 4-6" anyway? Gold is the big thing now and so are tot lots and parks, etc. The Ace is a tot lot king. You get so many options with the machine. Another thing-the Ace is much lighter than it's higher priced but fantastic peers. Gold and valuable objects come in so many different condutivity ranges and configurations I don't think there's any reason to get anything else unless you really get the bug and watch screens and analyze objects, etc.
 
One should always start with a lower end detector as it's easier to learn. The high end detectors have quite a learning curve but the 250 is such a good machine you may never want to bump up to a more expensive one. Many of us oldtimers use the 250 in lieu of our high end machines. You can't go wrong with the 250.

As Ontario Canada is still snow-covered, I guess I don't need to make my decision immediately.
That being said, based on your comments and my little research, I will probably get the 250.
Actually, I'll probably get it sooner than later. It will give me an opportunity to familiarize myself with the unit before the ground is 'ready'.

The Ace is definitly the way to go for a beginner. It is, in my and many other peoples opinion on this forum, the best detector you can get for the price right now on the market.
 
the ace is the way to go for first machine..just as i did..works great..easy to use and it will get you hooked into this hobby very quickly..:detecting::clapping::garrett::thumbup:
 
l would suggest the ACE 250. Good function, depth and various coils to help with your preferred hunting niche.
 
250....All the wayyyyyyyyyyyy...easy to use and if you get extra coil(s) its like having more machines.And the depth is very impressive..better than some high enders...enjoy!!!!!!!
 
I like my Ace250, but I like my GTP1350 because of discrimination and depth. The GTP1350 is a mid range detector, easy to use!

Would you please explain the difference between the 2 models using the terms discrimination and depth?

Depth appears clear.....one model can "read / detect' deeper than another? Is this correct?

Discrimination....How is one model better than another in terms of .. discrimination?
 
Yeah it's probably the best machine out there for beginners and it's so good there really isn't any reason to move up to a higher end machine unless you just want to.

Hey our buddy John lives up there and he hunts in the snow and does quite well, especially on sledding hills.

The 1350 has 24 notches of discrimination. The Ace has 12 notches.
Depth is a relative matter with detectors. Most targets are in the top 4 inches most of the time. There wouldn't be a great difference in depth unless the ground you are hunting is more highly mineralised. Unless you live near where volcanic activity or mining has taken place, then there's a good chance that the ground around you, is not highly mineralised. The wet sand at a beach is a place where the 1350 may do better than the Ace too as it has an automatic ground handling feature and a salt elimination mode. I've found that the Ace has handled all grounds that I've detected in. I've even taken it to hunt on an old gold field (in which the ground wasn't too mineralised) here in Australia with no problems. There is a way to set the Ace up so that it can handle mineralised ground when I've needed to. What happens, when you are hunting on mineralised ground with a detector has has a fixed ground balance (like the Ace) is that you start hearing a lot of false signals and the detector looses depth eta. I'll tell you about that should the need ever arise.
I've never seen a 1350, but do own a GTI 1500 as well as the Ace, so I can't make any intelligent comments on it. I've recently bought another Ace after a 9 month sabbatical from one and when I set it up for the type of targets that I like to go after, I find that is one very effective detector. It's easy to use and learn and it's surprising the amount of information that you can get out of it, after a bit of learning. Due to both this and it's light weight, it's pretty much my favourite detector. I actually prefer it over my GTI when the GTI has the imaging coil on it as I can tell good from bad targets with it more easily and quickly.
Good luck with which ever detector that you buy and I look forward to seeing your finds as you start detecting. It'll surprise you how it can get it's hooks into you once you progress in the hobby.

Hi CJW,just to throw a spanner into the works here is my advice.If i were you i would visit a reputable dealer and explain what you want from a detector,where you want to hunt what sort of hunting you want to do etc.The dealer will then show you a number of different detectors from a number of different manufacturers and explain the merits and downsides of each model.You may then start to get an understanding of how the machines work and it will be easier for you to choose a machine to suit your needs.The problem with asking people on the different forums is that most people will recommend a detector from that forum......ask on a garrett forum they will recommend a garrett,ask on a whites forum they will recommend a whites,on a tesoro forum a tesoro.....see the problem.I'm not suggeting in any way that the 250 is no good,it's a good basic machine, but what i will say is there are better options out there.Don't be put off from buying a top end machine if you want to....most have settings to make the operation of the machine as easy as switch on and go.After you have used such a machine in these settings you have then got all the advanced settings to use so you will not outgrow the machine.My feeling is that if you buy a top end machine from the start you will have top performance,you will find more objects and you will be more likely to stick with the hobby.As i said earlier visit a reputable dealer,get him to show you a number of machines and ask loads of questions and buy the best machine that funds will allow.This way you will get a machine that will work for you and one that you won't tire of in a hurry.Regards,Neil.
 
Hi,

Start with the Ace 250 and see how you go, and then decide whether you really want to get into detecting further.
Why but a $1500 machine and then find out " it's not your bag"
It was my first and I still love my Ace and use it half the time.
I think it is the best value for $ machine on the market for the depth and features it provides.
It's light and easy to use and finds lots.

I got the ACE 250 today and will take my first steps into the hobby with it....( as soon as the snow is gone).

I'm sure I will have questions / concerns in the future and will 'tap-in' on the knowledge base here.
