I am thinking about buying the New Pro Coil for my Explorer SE. My question is, the Pro coil a Double d coil? How well does the coil do in the how soils of Virginia? If this is a double D coil I had heard that Double D coils do very well in bad soil, like the red soil of Virginia. I am able to borrow the 5x10 Double D coil to try in Virginia. Are their any opinions on this? I was told my stock coil for the Explorer Se will not do well in Virginia. I usually hunt in all metal sensitivity as high as possible deep on. My last hunt in Virginia I did not do very well with my Explorer Se in the hot soil. Thanks

A lot of people like the Pro coil and it does balance nice and separate targets well.The problem I had with this coil it didn't give me the depth the 10.5 coil did.I went over the same area I used the Pro coil and got silver dimes 8- 9 inches with the 10.5 that was missed by the newer Pro coil.I really wanted to like this coil, but in the park I usually hunt it didn't perform.I finally sold the coil.I used the 5x10 Joey coil and was disappointed with this coil also.

There are many people who feel it gets a little better depth and separates just as well if not better. I'm one of them...and myself along with 5 others compared the 2 coils together. The results???....all 6 of us prefer the sef coil.
Not saying the pro coil is not a good one...because it is but the sef coil works better for us.

3 from IL... 2 from MO...and 1 from IN.
Also was a 7th gentleman from TN that is a relic hunter but I did not personally hunt with him. He felt the sef hit better too but did prefer the light weight of the pro coil.

so there must be quite the diff. in wieght then....argggg.......I want to try one myself....but I am getting fatigued fast lately past year....Heart problems.....I still may try it out...I have a swingythingy......it's the x-1 probe that adds even more wieght....dang....I use the 11"pro without the probe and I am fine....for a while.

My understanding is that all Explorer coils are Double D. The stock coil, Pro coil and SEF are all Double D coils. I don't think there are concentric coils made for the Explorer?
The only reason I can think of that a Double D coil would not do well in a particular soil is due to lots of mineralization giving falsing and nulls. This may be due to the increased ground coverage that the Double D coil gives you over a concentric... so it seems less stable and more chattery because it is picking up more "targets"? I know there are plenty of people using Explorers in Virginia soil, so I'm thinking it may have more to do with settings than the actual soil.
I have found that the Explorer has very good target separation, but you need to go slow. If you're sweeping it like a weed whacker, you're not going to find much and you'll get falsing.
I have the Pro coil and the depth is impressive. More I should say the target ID at great depths is the most accurate. I have never dug targets as deep as I have with the SE and Pro coil.
I have seen many warnings about running sensitivity too high on the Explorer. Many people I know run sens between 25-27 and will not go higher. You may want to do some more reading about the sensitivity issue and think about what the result is you're going for. More sensitivity does not equal maximum depth. If you are maxed out and sweeping too fast, I can see missing a lot of targets. Also if the setting "deep" and "fast" are on, signals can be truncated and easily missed. If you are running with the "deep" setting, I think a slow sweep speed is necessary.
What type of hunting are you doing makes a difference too. If you're hunting CW relics, beaches, woods, home sites or hunted out parks you will get different recommendations for settings.

I think you are correct. I would not recommend the concentric for every day park hunting. I can only think of one area where it would shine, and that would be as Andy suggests in his book, up near metal objects where the concentric would work better than a DD would.
As far as target separation, it's nowhere near in the league of any of the DD coils, so that is about all I could recommend it for, but that alone could pull in a few nice keepers over the years. If you can get a used one for a good price I would say go for it.

Im in Oklahoma, the Pro coil is the best thing Ive every done. I hunt a park that is over 100 years old (even the local clubs have hunted it for 30 years and call it a hunted out park) I put that coil on my SE a month ago and have came up with 14 silver coins and over 30 wheaties and one indian. I also have the SEF and it is by far heavier. I can swing the Pro coil for over 8 hours and dont feel it and Im built like a toothpick.
