Hi wondering if any body has used a probe and would recommend one, and do probes detect all metals

Thanks David.

The Vibra Probe 570 is a well built good probe. It is waterproof and easy to use. It only detects at the tip and gets about a 1 1/2 of distance.

Tiny Tac also makes a good probe. They are cheaper than the Vibra probe.

Now depending on your detector and your budget you could look at an in-line probe. Sun Ray makes an excellent in line probe. Kinda pricy, but from what I read a very good probe.

Their are others like the Bullseye, and Uni probe. Just do a search all these names.

I am looking down the road at a probe. I had one but did not like it. I think my next one will be the Uni Probe, Beale.

Beale,

Just a week or so ago I added the UniProbe to my arsenal for use with the X70. I am very happy with it, but they are a bit pricey. I got the UniProbe with the electronics built into the headphones. I use the SunRay X1 with my explorer and it is wonderful. The advantage with the UniProbe is that I can use it with any of my detectors.

Glenn

I purchased a Vibraprobe 570 from Kellyco. It shipped internationally and was delivered within just a few days - which was quite surprising considering the distance involved. It comes with a 9V battery and a built-in switch that is gravity activated. When you remove it from the belt loop and point it upwards for two seconds, the probe activates. It turns itself off when no metal has been detected for a few minutes. I personally recommend it for people seeking a tough and useful pinpointer to compliment their detector. The X-Terra series detectors have a great pinpointer built into them but digging targets from narrow holes means you can't always fit the coil into the hole. A pinpointer for regular detectorists is quite handy. Otherwise, it is not essential when working with the X-Terra detectors. If you can spare the extra cash and want to purchase a rather handy tool, this is a good option. Being able to jam it into underwater creek ledges is very useful to me. Works for relics, coins and prospecting.

Advantages:
No on-off buttons
Completely Waterproof.
Lightweight.
Sensitive to very small targets.
Almost completely Silent.
Signals Via Vibration (not Audio).
Different pulses indicate proximity to target.
No Headphones Needed.
Removal of Detector Headphones Not Required.
Reliable all-metal detector.
Uses Pulse Induction (like many High End Detectors)
You can push the tip into soft dirt and sand (even under water) to find your target.
Fairly rugged.
Ships with a special nylon web belt holster.

Dislikes:
If the coil of your detector coil is close to the Vibraprobe, the detector will sound off with each pulse burst from the Vibraprobe.
This is not a serious problem and can be reduced if you keep the unit holstered on your far hipside.
The sound is a bit like a very fast pulsed "warbling" sound.

Each of these items in the picture below was recovered on the same day with the use of the Vibraprobe 570:

I got one of the Auto Max V-4's for just shipping when I bought my detector from Kellyco. If you have a chance to get one cheap, it's worth the money. I would not pay full price for one. They work OK, but not near as good as the one's mentioned above. Here in Arizona, the dirt is usually packed hard and a pinpointer doesn't help much. I many times wish I had the nice lawns and soft soil that are found in other areas. I tend to leave it home on the shelf most of the time. Even though some of the units are a little pricey, if you are in an area where the soil is not compacted hard all the time, a pinpointer will help speed up your recovery time and gives you less chance of damaging a valuable coin because you will be able to locate the coin easier. Just one rare coin, not damaged from removal from the ground could easily pay for your pinpointer.

Good hunting, John K

Iv'e had the Uniprobe version and it was a really good Pinpointer very deep.

Hey Glenn did you mount the uniprobe on your X70? Or do you just keep it handy? If so does this mean that you have to remove your standard headphones to hear the uni? Thanks in advance for the help, Beale.

Beale,

Keep in mind that all the controls are built into the headphones (as opposed to the pocket probe version).
* The headphones plug directly into the detector and replace whatever headphones you were previously using. The headphones are the same as the Gray Ghost.
* The cable to the probe comes directly from the headphones. Therefore, the only decision is where to place the probe itself when not in use. Someone stated that he just stuck the probe in his back pocket. That seems to work well for me. I thought it might be a bit awkward when you bend over to dig, but it has not been.

Louis,

The battery is placed inside the left headphone. You just uses a coin, in the slot provided, to pop off the cover and install the 9V battery. It takes 10 seconds.

I would definitely recommend the Automax probe. The probe is 8-1/2" long and 5/8" diameter, and lets you get deep into smaller holes. I've had the other smaller ones but the Automax beats them for ease of use.

Thank You very much Captain

Glen,
It says the Uniprobe hits a coin at 5 inches. Is there a way to turn the sensitivity down so it's maybe an inch or two? I don't see an adjustment for that in the pictures? Also how long does the battery last?

Thanks,
Kenny

I have a Vibra Probe 570 PP. Works great and gets about 1.5"-2" depth. Seems to detect all metals. Only problem is, it interferes with the XT70 so I have to set the coil a good 3' away, I am running in All Metal with sense at 28 though, LOL. HH, Mike

I have a friend from Germany that just moved over here to the us and he had a pinpointer called a sherlock dts-pro. he let me use it and it work great. I bought one of of ebay for under sixty bucks.I have the automax but it is big and bulky. the sherlock is only 7" in overall length and fits in my pouch really well. it also has a led light that illuminates where you are probing.there is also a sensitivity knob. the only thing I have found wrong with it is you have to put the 9 volt battery in backwards. Here is the action I got mine from:

The uniprobe under my conditions hits maybe 3-4 inches battery is good for 10-12 hours. I have both the pocket unit and a few of the headset units the only weak link is the BNC connecter not having stress relief but Radio Shack carries them for 5.00 . You can't beat the versitility of these units just a bit costly but you will spend less time pinpointing with these. Dan

Kenny,

The UniProbe specs say the depth is 4 to 6 inches. My experience is that It will detect at 4", but I question the 6". I find that the depth is more than adequate. I believe that you can reduce the depth by turning down the threshold. I just adjust the threshold to the point where I get a couple beeps per second. That is what gives me the 4" depth.

The UniProbe is very good for precise pinpointing of coins that are in the 3 to 4 " range. Almost always my probing pick (used carefully so as not to damage a valuable coin) hits the target at 3" on the first try. This allows you to be very careful in your probing before digging shallow coins. For coins at 3", I leave my probing pick in place, use my digger/knife to slice the ground about 1" to the left of the target. Then I use my digging shovel to pry open the ground. The target is at the end of my probing pick.

The Uniprobe specs say that the 9V battery is good for "up to 12 hours". This is continuous use. For me, the probe is "on" only about 10% of the time in the field and the rest of the time it is in the "off" position. This translates to roughly 120 hours of detecting. Note that the switch is used to either connect the headphones to the detector output (turning off the probe) or to the probe output (disconnecting the detector from the headphones).

Personally, I prefer the UniProbe/headphones combination. I got that combination for only $30 more than the pocket probe. They are Gray Ghost type headphones.

I had the DX-1 on my MXT and it worked great. However it was dedicated to the MXT and couldn't use it with my other detector. I sold the DX-1 and got the Vibraprobe 570. The 570 is quite long, ( about13" overall) but it brings its own holster and it works great. Got it from Kellyco.
