Question about Andy's article

I was reading the article about the pro coil and Andy had stated he was running ferrous instead of conductivity so he could tell between a good sound and a large hunk of iron deep. How does running in ferrous achieve this? I understand that the high tones run to the right instead of up and down but how does that tell you that its not a piece of iron in a way that conductivity wouldn't?

In Ferrous tones iron will give a low tone. In conductive tones iron can give a high tone similar to a good target.

Rusty iron will give a high tone but the cursor will go to the bottom right. Good target high tones will be upper right in most cases.
