Question for excal users

Hey I have a friend that has a well used excal and an almost new tiger shark. I have a 1280x and it is almost unusable in saltwater. My friend will sell me either one of the detectors for under 500 bucks and I know the excal call is a better machine for salt water but the excal has a short in the head phones and will need to be sent back for repairs. I am reading alot of nightmare stories about Minelabs repair time and the cost of repairs. Would it still be worth buying the excal . It is still usable but the sound goes in and out on the right side.

I have talked with many people that tell me it's the excal or nothing but like I said the TS is almost new ..
 
Get the excal, send it in and if U R lucky U will have it back by Christmas. If U R really lucky it might B repaired properly the first time around. If U R going to hunt an exal U better have more than one
 
Buy the Excalibur and fix them yourself.Or send them to that guy who changes the headphones to better ones. If your not diving than a above water fix can be almost anything. Or do it right. Lots of options here.
 
Get the Excal and have new set of phones put on it. You can't beat the Excalibur in the water! I've had mine going 3 1/2 years and I've found more than what the machine cost me. I'd buy another one in a heart beat!
 
I get the TS and SS confused but if the TS is for freshwater, you'll have the same problems as the 1280x. HH
 
The TS has a salt mode so I am thinking it should be able to handle salt water somewhat. The Excal has a short in the head phones but it is somewhere in the box itself. I talked with the guy last night. I would like to get the excal for sure but if I have to pay another 2-300. bucks to get it fixed .... I could have found one in working order . Pretty much a money thing by that point.

I am going to meet up with him on labor day weekend and try both machines. If the excal is still usable I may just get it.
 
After reading for hours on this and other forums I am going to get the TS. Just too many problems getting repairs done on the excals. I have read numerous complaints . I know the Excal is the best performer out there but I just can't trust the company's service department.. :thumbdown:
 
it may take a little longer for service on the Excal if needed but keep in mind there are some parts for the TS and SS you cant get at all ! i know guys that have had there TS in for service over 14 months! the TS is a great fresh water detector iv had 3 of them and got about 1/2 the depth of the Excal in salt water. if Tesoro ever gets there connector problem fixed ,id buy another one just to hunt for Gold chains as they will hit on them when my Excal wont. but as far as depth goes,the TS is not even close.
 
At that price try and get them both. An Excal that works can't be beat but like erikk said have a back-up just in case. Good luck on your choice. HH :minelab:
 
:cheers: Alright ,I am buying the excal this weekend . After spending lots and lots of time asking people and researching, I am sure that buying the excal 1000 for 475. is the right thing to do even with a short in the headphones. I think this machine will work out real well. Some people told me that the tiger shark would handle the salt some what but I was worried about the depth and really just knowing that I would kick myself for not buying the excal if the TS was a slug in the salt surf.
