I am sitting at home at night toying with my 305. I was doing some air tests and playing with adjustments.
I ran some metal by the coil and came up with an ID number of 38.
As expected the 38 remains on the screen. I accidentally pressed the minus button. The display number jumped down to 24. I pressed it again and it changed to 20.
I thought I read most everything but not anything about this.
What is this for if anything?

every time you press the negative button your canceling out that id number on the screen....it would keep going to a lower number each time you cancel one out.... press the plus to add them back. or factory reset to restore all

Each number represents a bin. As Bob said, when you pushed the button you blocked out that bin, now if you passed a metal under the coil that would normally fall into that bin(so to speak) it will be rejected and you'll see nothing.
Before heading out and using a disc pattern, I don't know the 305 so maybe they don't have patterns, make darn sure it will pick up what your searching for. I spent days searching in pattern 2 on my 705 before I realized that it rejected gold rings.
Also as Bob said, maybe you should do a factory reset.

When you have been randomly playing and exploring your XTerra a factory reset before seriously using it to hunt is THE thing to do! The killer part of this hobby is we never know what we don't know. Eliminate trash and eliminate gold, go gold only and you eliminate most coins. How many fantastic targets have we walked over blindly or gold that we failed to give a second look to because it seemed like trash? Reset AND read the manual over and over until you know what everything means. Until then stick with the presets, they are pretty darn good in most cases.
Now you have 2 cents more than before!

I Looked up the reset procedure and did a reset.
When I re-read the instructions I see one has to press the "Accept/Reject" button to actually make a change to the discrimination patterns.
So I don't think I changed any settings. I was just a bit surprised the display numbers change as i pressed the plus minus buttons.

So when are the Temperatures going to change and melt the snow and thaw the ground?
I picked up a 10.5" MF DD Coil this week and tested it out in the snow in a plowed parking lot.
Was hoping to find something deposited by the snow plow. The piles are Too Big and tall to expect any real results.
I spread a few coin on the ice and snow just to verify the coil works. In and around the house I have too much EMI.
Over-all I was a bit surprised about the extra weight and size of the 10.5 coil. Not sure I am going to like the extra weight.
I am thinking I should have gone with the 6" coil/s.

Turn the coil around backwards and it will balance better.

We're supposed to start warming up here tomorrow. This next week they're forecasting a couple nights when it isn't supposed to get down to freezing, so our snow is going to go away pretty quickly. How long it's going to take to get the frost out of the ground is an entirely different matter, but spring is on the way!

The 10.5 DD felt heavy at first to me also. After swinging it for a few days I don't even notice anymore.
