Question on detector problem........

Gunswinger

New member
I have an explorer XS and hunted all day in the rain. I had a rain cover on the unit & tried to keep it dry under my rain coat. The next day I turned it back on and it worked fine. Then it started to turn it's self off and back on. Then it wouldn't stay on. Then it would not come on. I left the machine off the rest of the day. With out a cover. The next day it would turn it's self on and off. Any idea's ???

Get yourself a water machine for the rainstorms as water and electronics don't mix....surely don't want a repair bill and down time with your unit....Good news it will probably dry out so let it set in a warm place for a week and take the battery out and for gosh sakes leave it off for the week.. I would imagine Bob is right and might try a hair dryer on low and go over the battery compartment. Remember on low not high Explorer is just a tough unit to keep completely dry due to the area of the electronics including the battery compartment..

I know that if the Battery isn't firmly pushed into the Battery Compartment that it will move around enough to make the detector have false start ups like what is happening to your unit. It also could be a sticky Power Button. Hope it is something simple so you don't lose any detecting time and please let us know when you are able to hunt once again and if you figured out what caused this. Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

if you don't get a water detector you could try something I saw - think it was one of the Minelab Exploring the Explorer DVDs. What I saw was a plastic water bottle was emptied and cut so that it could be slide over the back end of the Explorer and under the arm rest.

The headphone is plugged into its jack before sliding the 'bottle' over the end. It was one of those tips maybe a Micro Tip - so one can use the detector when it rains or along the beach.

Just a thought. (I know water bottles that would be close to snug would be cheaper than a water detector).

Gunswinger,

My explorer would just power down when I would lay it down or just start using it, I never knew when it would happen...

I was using the Battery pack that you put the AA battery's in.

I opened up the battery pack and found that the silver disks (Squares) at the front of the battery pack had some built in play.....so I took some Balsa wood and made a piece for each side that would press up against the disks and take out all of the play and then replaced the cover.....and wallla no more problems......

Hope it is simple as that for you.....but it worked good for me.

I attened a hunt and many detectors went down, do to the rain.

I took a quick look at the detector of Gunswinger. The detector did not have what looked like water damage. It did look like some condensation thou.

When we powered detector, it powered right up. So, just put it somewhere warm. So, it can dry completly.

At your own risk open the housing, and add a silaca pac(found in most electronics packing) this will stop future condensation..
