quick mask question

Hi all, Newbie here with a question on the quick mask feature on the e-trac. I've read up on it but I still do not understand this feature. Could you guys please explain what exactly it does and how it works(or when and how to use it in the field). Also what kind of pattern to use in quick mask(how much disc.). Thanks all and happy hunting. pointer80

You can set the quick mask to what ever discrimination levels you want, but it's in rows and colums, not pixels like the discrimination screen. Most people only disc out the bottom few rows of iron, leaving all else open. Because the process of discrimination can skew a target response, it can be used almost like a quick "all metal" mode to re-check a target.

This is an expample of one of the ways I use it;
I get a high conductor hit in one direction then not in the other, I step to the 90 degree and swing again and get an iffy signal, but I liked the first high tone and want to see if I can bring that tone back so I swing a few more times and know there is something down there as it wants to sound but is having problems, I look at the depth...it is deep, so I push the QUICK mask button and swing over the target again, now the target sounds and my numbers are hitting in the bottom right corner, I see this because my Quick mask screen is almost wide open whereas the Detect screen is set up similar to a coin program with discrimination. I recognize this as iron junk that is giving off a bit of a high tone, so I push the iron mask button again to togle back to the disc screen and move on.

If however I were to get the same area of numbers as i did on the very first hit while in the quick mask and even if the target is still what I would describe as trying to come in in the hiigh conductor range then I would pinpoint...is the target small? if it is then Dig.

Another example would be like this...I am on a boring side of a mountain looking for any burried thing...I run in quick mask almost open and follow the iron signals for a place to hunt for a camp or cabin or ?

Hope that helps, Andys book is fantastic for learning the uses of features.

good luck
