Found a 1840 - 1860 Marine Button this spring and just got around to getting some naval jelly to clean it.
Kept most of the gold gild . I'm happy.
 
Great button. Rare to find them like that.
 
Naval jelly? You know sailors and marines don't get along. HH
 
Bob naval jelly is a mild acid used to remove rust.
Can be found at auto body supply stores.,

From what i read it is great for gold gilded buttons but not for other types.
