Finally getting out a little bit with my new Safari. Had a question on reading, Does anyone else get like 38 or 39 on nails. I picked up four today that were. I did notice that the number floated a little bit but mainly came back to the 38. Now I noticed that a solid 38 or 9 was usually a good target. Anyways came up with a few Wheaties at about 7 inches. My small probe is almost useless. Definitely having to dig plugs and use pinpointer. I think in the yards that I am detecting I will us my Tesoro to get the top targets and then run the safari over after words.

Klever, silver and clad usually ring up around 37 to 39, and 40 is always rusty junk iron. Rusty nails ring up like silver and fool many detectors, especially BENT rusty nails. I have an Etrac that in my opinion only does one thing better than the Safari and that ir discriminate, I can usually see if it is nails by hitting iron mask which the Safari doesn't have. I have always noticed that the Safari will give a scratchy high pitch on nails and a clear note on silver or clad. You need to learn the Safari song. Don't give up on her, I have found lots of goodies in beat out places that I gave up on a long time ago. The Safari is a great machine but you need to read the music.

I agree with SS on the nails. As you get to know Safari's song, try tossing both silver and coins along with those pesty nails on the ground. Perhaps you'll be able to tell the subtle differences each sings. If I haven't been dirt fishing for a couple of weeks, I usually take worn silver and clad coins with me each hunt just to familiarize myself with both audio and tid readings at the hunt site. HH

Thanks everyone on the tips. Thanks on the number 40, that's good to know. Any bit of information I can get is definitely helpful. I did order the safari/ quatro book from Kellyco. Of course it is back ordered. So who knows when I will receive it, but until then you all are my book, :) I definitely can tell I am really going to love this machine once I learn it.
Also like the idea of trying to learn the music.,.....

Klever, I have the link to the Safaris TDI numbers but this POS tablet won't let me post it. Google Safari VDI numbers and search around and you will find what you need. I chose the Safari because I didn't want the bells and whistles of the Etrac but found an Etrac cheap on Craigslist so I bought it. My Safari is now a backup because alot of the places I hunt are trashy and the E scrims better but in a cleaner area or woods hunting I take my Safari and "let her eat". My Safari has amazed me with its sensitivity and depth. I usually dig anything questionable when it comes to bouncy numbers as it has turned out more than a few times that a bouncy number is a silver coin on edge which most detectors cant see. Minelab FBS detectors are definitly great machines but what I had to learn was PATIENCE. When I slowed way down and let the detetor do her job is when it really dawned on me how good the FBS machines really are. There are plenty of good machines out there but Minelab IMO is the best.

Safaris can vary a bit form machine to machine. Silver is ALWAYS 39 on mine, tho it may wobble a bit at first if it is deeper/on edge(7"+).

What you may be seeing is the rust halo of iron, + I've seen a lot of iron at 40 or even a bit lower if the halo is extensive.

Bouncy/warbly hi 30's for me are always can slaw, but that may be because theres tons of the stuff where I hunt.

Hate to beat a dead horse, but Sound not TID is what you need to be primarily concerned with. I've had perfect quarter sounds at 14 (a lot) and below 10(a few times).

What are you finding at 9 in the way of 'good targets'? I know small gold can turn up there, but all I have seen there is foil.

Thanks everybody, great info. Thanks S.S. on the VDI info. So far my best finds have been wheat penny's. They are ringing in at 37. Had a junk ring at 23, I got a 14 k gold ring with my outlaw then checked with Safari and it was a 12. Really tough to use in someones yard as a lot of times you have to dig a plug and some homeowners do not like that. So I guess I need to get out and practice at some parks or schools. Still having issues with pinpointing but I know eventually it will come

I thought I would have problems with pinpointing too because I was using a concentric coil on my other machine but I practiced a little bit and off I went. Try a coin garden if you dont have one. I have been detecting for over 40 years and I thought I didn't need one of those "silly" things but it really did help me to learn my machine. Minelabs are like nothing else and this was explained to me when I bought my Safari but....being a hardheaded caveman, I thought otherwise so I struggled at first but when I finally listened is when it all came together for me. Buying a Minelab made MDing all brand new for me again after i turned up a few goodies in beat to death areas, like I was told I would, I was sold. Been eyeballing a CTX but don't really need it with having Safari and an Etrac. Happy hunting!

I totally agree with KinTN about focusing on sound rather than numbers. Get the best set of headphones that you can afford. I recently invested in a set of Grey Ghosts, I couldn't believe the difference in sound quality vs. my old set. well worth the $$ in my opinion

These guys are spot on with the advice. For me after a while I could tell by the tone like stated above was high tone that was scratchy. Another thing I feel also gave it away was would never pin point just right. So couple the scratchy tone with a hard to pin point or just seems off to pin point was always bent nail or fence. But dig a few and im confident these posts will make sense. Always recheck that hole after you pull a nail though.

KinTIN, you were right on the 9. It was a 14 k gold ring. Although did not find it on the Safari I checked it and that is what it came up with. So I was assuming 9 was good most of the time. It rang in really loud with my outlaw, about 5 inches down. Still working on pinpointing before I can dig houses. Looking forward to my new sef coil to help with that.

Andy's book explains this situation very well. In the ferrous audio mode, the pitch will always get lower as the ferrous content increases. In the conductivity mode once you enter the negative numbers area (iron) the pitch starts to increase again. Sometimes by checking the LCD you will see the negative numbers for iron versus the positive numbers for silver. However, I must admit that many times I have dug deep, rusted nails that were indicated by a high pitch as if they were a silver coin. Maybe, if we are hunting an area with lots of deep, rusted nails, we should be experimenting with using the ferrous audio. Has anyone used the ferrous audio settings in such an area?

Cos, I think a few of us who were new to Minelab products have migrated from starting as coin shooters (conductive/coin, coin/jewelry ) to overall relic hunters. So in fields and woods, I hunt 90 % in ferrous ( relic mode, all metal) . I want to keep the spectrum of possible finds wide open and 'scrim out as little as possible. I also set to low density to gain a more accurate tid, eventhough audio results is the first of my criteria for digging potential signals. I still recover rusted or square nails sounding like merc dimes in relic mode.

How is the Safari on gold rings - jewelry?

I hear it hits well on silver but how about the gold?
Those who have the Safar- would you buy another if you had too?

I would not buy the Safari again even though I do like it alot. I bought a used Etrac and that has kinda ruined me. IMO the ONLY thing the Etrac does better than the Safari is discriminate. You get the depth and it will scream on silver and WILL separate in trashy areas BUT it doesn't give the ferrous and conductive readings like the Etrac does. I hunt very trashy parks and just couldn't pull it off with the Safari. I even avoide trashy parks with my Etrac until I really understood it..Then it was paydirt! I have had alot of fun with my Safari and I still take it out but it is mostly my trusted backup now. It definitly finds silver and has amazed me but where I hunt, I need better discrimination period.

Klever..quick note on Andy's Safari/Quatro book...I was able to make contact with him a couple months ago and he said that the book is now out of print with no plans for more, so if you want one, i would start looking on eBay and other second source sites instead of waiting on a KellyCo backorder. I was finally able to get a copy and it was well worth the wait!

Yeah I was kind of starting to think that is what was going on. They did have one on ebay but it is already up to $30 plus and rising. I know it will be a good investment but having a hard time right now trying to come up with that after the new detector and new coil. ( So if anyone has an extra one, hahahaha!!!!!!!!
