Received my Ace 250 today

 Yeah, after I hit a few quarters and a half in an area I thought wouldn't have alot, I started skipping the dimes and pennies...didn't have but a few minutes anyway in the rain...so I was looking for the big $. :detecting: I left everything notched in also just to see what was there, and what was next to the coins. I dug 3 nickles too that hit a solid nickle ID. I don't see that I need another detector right now...I think this one will keep me busy for some time. :detecting:

I sed......

In this soil, the vast majority
of the pennies I see ring up as dimes. I think they get a
halo in this gumbo after a while. If I air test a penny, it
rings as a penny. ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
-----------------------------------------------------------------

I found out why I was ringing "dime" on the pennys..
I was lurking on another site I stumbled across,
and saw a thread about IDing zinc pennys. Many
machines can tell the difference evidentally.
Some have a "zinc" indication.
Anyway, that is why I keep ringing "dime" on those pennys.
Most all of the ones I've been finding are copper
pennys before they switched to zinc. Anyway, I tested
it with a air test, and sure nuff, the ace 250 can tell
the difference. It seems to be calibrated for the newer
zinc pennies I think, as the zincs do ring up as pennys.
But I tried a older copper penny, and sure nuff, it rang
as a dime. Evidentally, a copper penny is real close to a
dime as far as the conductance, etc.. Pretty close in size
too.. Hair bigger, which could make up for the extra..
So anyway, if you ring a dime, might be a dime. But could
be a copper penny also...Which means it might be a wheat,
or even older..
Which means it might still be worth the trouble pulling out
of the ground. LOL Many ignore the zincs it seems if they
ring up that way.

.....where cents can register. The first two are split right at zinc cent range, and will usually tell you the difference between a very corroded zinc cent and one in better shape, while the third will register most copper cents and dimes together in the same segment. Being able to differentiate between copper cents and dimes has long been used as a test for conductivity separation on different machines. Most cannot tell the difference because of he very similar conductivity range as you suggested.

On the one hand, you can always just notch out the zinc range to keep from digging most aluminum screwcaps and zinc cents, but on the other hand you will also most likely be discriminating out older Indian Head cents because they will normally fall into the same I.D. range as zincs after being in the ground for many years.

There are always trade-offs anytime you decide to notch out certain segments, as you lose some of the "good" right along with the "bad".

Hummm.. Yea, I really hadn't noticed that there were
two segments in the "cent" area. I did a quicky retest,
"air" and the clean zinc hit on the 2nd penny segment.
The copper pennies were hitting on the dime segment.
I guess that first penny notch is for some fairly dead
ones..I rarely hit that first notch when detecting a
penny. I pulled about 40-50 more outa the ground today
in the backyard. Found two wheats today..Out of all those
separate hole penny's, those were the first wheats, and one
was from the 30's. The vast majority of my penny way galaxie
are 70's era pennys. Someone lost a full pants full out
there in the late 70's... It's almost like they took a coffee
can full and just swung it around letting them fly every
which way... :/
