Rechargeable batteries for the Ex II SE

Anyone use a high-end rechargeable that is specific to the Minelab as you have to use 1.5v x 8 for a total of 12v. All the batteries I looked at are 1.2v and when you utilize them for a pack the MD does not run as it needs 12v, 9.6v doesn't cut it. I would also prefer low-discharge as I hunt usually twice a week. Any tips or leads would be appreciated.

Hmmm, I just unplugged my charged battery pack for my SE and it says 9.6 volts 1600mAH. It's NiMH so why can't I use my 8x1.2v NiMH which would give me 9.6v? I seem to recall doing this and it wouldn't work. I can't recollect but I thought it came on and then just shut off with a newly charged setup that I threw in it. I used 8 "Tenergy" NiMH 2600mAH at the time??

Now this is even more confusing. I just checked my other Slimpack and it's rated for 12v??? That's the one I usually use the 1.5v x 8 alkaline batteries with??

Help!

When i get home i will do a photo and write up on rechargeabe batterys and useing the right kind of batterys and charger. I will post it here in this fourm.

I use Duracell 2650 mAH NiMH in all of my detectors with no problems. Extremely long hunting time with them.

I don't doubt that but in the Slimpack 12v battery pack it states, "use only 1.5v AA cells" so why is it that with the non opening battery pack they are using a 9.6v pack?? Why can't I use the 1.2v NiMH 8 AA in this 12v pack?

Is there way of having a battery pack that can use rechargeable 1.2v NiMH batteries for a 9.6v total charge? Is anyone here getting the point at what I am saying?

I'd rather use high-end NiMH instead of paying for alkalines or using the default non opening 9.6v battery pack which is only 1600mAH and doesn't really hold a charge for that long.

I ignored the "use only 1.5v AA cells" and used the 1.2 volt Duracell's...........No problems.

that's odd! I did it and it didn't work. I must have did something a little "off" I'll try again. Seems like this is on my end with this problem.

I've got 8 x 2800mah in mine and they lasts longer than the 9.6 rechargable pack. I get about 12-14 hours on the 9.6v rechargable.
Also if you check the 1.2 AA rechargables you'll get a reading of about 1.30 -1.4v with a meter depending on the qualitywhen charged(although not under load)

I see they even have 2900mAH AA now. You can get an 8 pack for $25.97.

and yes I have been using rechargables in my aa pack since day one.. no problems.. and you can get them cheap... batterysupply.com has the 2650 duracells for less than 20 bucks for 8

I am going to load em' up tomorrow with the rechargeables. Maybe at the time I put them in wrong. We will see what happens.

Some of the XS will say 12 volts, but they are actually 9.6 volts batteries in it. Now you have the best Rechargeable i have ever seen the Tenergy 2600 are awesome batteries and never seen any that work better as I have tried them all. Now if it dont work on you Explorer i would check the batteries to see the ends are clean and test each battery too in case you have a bad one. If this is OK then i would look at you pack to see if it is cracked and the terminals are OK as I have seen 2 packs that had a problem and had to be replaced. One of them was cracked so the batteries didnt hold tight and had to be replaced.
Like i say The Tenergys are some great AA batteries and my daughter in the photography now uses these in her cameras and she too says they last longer than anything she has used before and yet cheaper then any of them too.

I wass hopeing to get some pics up but no go. Anyway, my advice is to look into a high quality charger and batterys. It will save you in the long run. Stay away from the depot or shack plug in the wall chargers and batterys. Two reasons is that the chargers "hot" charge the batterys too fast. You will get a full charge but not as long. Also it will kill a cell very fast. Low discharge batterys, what this meens is that the batterys when charged and stored "not used" will not discharge as fast over time. A high quality battery is made to withstand discharge and recharge many times, also charge up to the same voltage. Do a search for LA Crosse BC-900. This is the charger setup iv'e been useing for a long time.

I tried the rechargeables today and I had no problems. When I first got the MD a few years ago I tried rechargeables and they didn't work so I must have put them in wrong back then as they have to be put in positive on one side and negative on the other. I made sure they were in the right way and no problems.

I got a couple of questions.----Under normal conditions, about how much longer running time would you get out of the Tenergy NiMH 2600 mAH batteries compared to the Minelab 1600 mAH rerchargeable battery pack?------2nd question--where do you buy the Tenergy batteries & charger for them?------I've only used Minelab's 1600 & 1800 battery packs.-------Thanks, Del

I will take an educated guess and say 40-50% more swinging time before having to change the batteries as opposed to using the 1600 pack.

Here's my charger

here's the batteries

You can buy that charger which is the one I use and 8/16 AA batteries. They sell the Tenergy brand for sure. Buying in bulk gives you cheaper price per battery.

Here is what they look like below:

I think whats confusing you is Minelab doesnt want you to use batteries with MORE than a 12V combined rating... like the lithium Ion which produces 13V. Its on page 11 of your SE manual.

That part never confused me. What threw me is when I got this MD a few years ago I tried NiMH batteries and they didn't work so I thought in my mind that 8 x 1.2 = 9.6 it didn't work because of that but what probably happened is that I just put them in wrong in the battery pack. One side has to have the positives in a certain direction and the negative another. I use Tenergy 2600mAH now and I have no problems, runs fine.
