Relic Hunting and the Minelab Safari

Confetrit

Well-known member
I am a retired Firefighter and a Relic Hunter here from Georgia. I have been hunting off and on for some 35 years. I have owned several mid grade detectors and have liked the ones that I have owned and hunted with. I now own and use the Whites MXT PRO. I am overall pleased with this detector and what it can do. I have found some relics in areas beat to death by many different detectors and other hunters other than myself. Now comes my Minelab question. I have never personally owned a Minelab but I have always been impressed by what these detectors are capable of. Especially the GPX series used by hunters in the Division Hunts in Virginia. Unfortunately the GPX would be a little out of my budget. I have been looking at the Minelab Safari off and on for some time now. I know this detector has a Relic Mode, but I have seen very few videos on the Safari on Utube being used as a Relic Hunter. Is there a reason for this? I know this is a multi frequency detector built on the same platform as the Etrac. I would like to hear from some folks that own and use the Minelab Safari for Relic Hunting and hear some honest and upfront reviews from folks that are knowledgeable about and concerning the Safari. I am wondering if the Safari would give me more depth on relics than the MXT PRO. The fact that I haven't seen more videos on the Safari hunting relics makes me wonder if this is more of a coin and jewelry detector. Am I wrong about this? Any feed back concerning this would be most appreciated as I have been throwing this back and forth in my mind for quite some time now. Thanks in Advance Kevin

Hello kevin i would say yes to the Safari i do own one but i wouls suggest a bigger coil then the stock for deep relics. The stock coil is base pn cpin sized targets but if you open tje safari up in all metal man you wont miss much.Npw i have owned the mxt with a 12x10 butterfly coil and it is a very capable unit for relics but depth i think the safari does just as good.

I have had a Safari 3 yrs now. Weak points are its slow & not really great in heavy iron & trash.
Good points are it has a nose for silver & nickels, works in wet salt water sand, easy to learn.
It does use 50 tones only & some just cant wrap there head around them. If it "clicks" with you
you can MD blindfolded with one. Since its a stripped down E trac it should preform about the
same.
For EQ tests see Gigmaster on u-tube. He has been putting up lots of videos under different
scenarios, also with other MD's like the deuce etc
