Response long

New member
Do any of you guys use the long target responce?

Played around with it some this evening in the yard. I need to spend more time with it but I think I may prefer it to normal.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I use long response all the time with the constant ringing I have in my ears it makes it easier for me to hear and not miss a target

I use the long response when there are far and few targets in the area. The deep targets that would normally make a slight beep, now become a longer tone and more noticeable.

I fell in love with it,,, and use it all the time. It's unmistakable when your over a target

I used to use "normal" response all the time---but now (and for some time have) use "long" exclusively on both my CTX & Etrac.----It's great & (IMO), makes you a WHOLE LOT less apt to miss good targets in any kind of ground & trash conditions.------Read what Minelab says about the long response in the owners manual-----VERY TRUE.---------Del

I switched from normal to long response right after getting my ctx 3 months ago and love it, haven't switched back! And what D&P says about seeing what the manual says about it is true! You can read all about the various response modes in the manual, I forget now what it says so am going to look it up again now that D&P OR reminded me of it because each response mode had its own benefits. It definately makes targets stand out more for me but there is another very good reason to use it.

All the time.. My main reasons if you like to run the sensitivity high, if the machine falses it will sound like what it is, and a target will sound off...

Excellent point cosmic & very true.----It's just much easier to pick out the good hits in the jumble. (IMO)-----Smooth is "ok" I guess, but it doesn't have the variability factor of the smooth response.---Pitch hold I never have liked on either the Etrac or CTX.----If a person gets used to/uses the long response for awhile, it's hard to settle for one of the other three responses the CTX offers (again, IMO).--------Del

Now that I think about it I believe my deepest bullets ever were in that mode. I have been wondering lately why I have not been able to get as deep relic hunting as the past and I think it is because I started using normal after beach hunting that way.

Normal is sharper so I think it locks on target ID better if that makes sense.

Next time I go I will switch back to long, I hunted with that kind of sound on my explorer almost exclusively

I think it would be too noisy for me in heavy trash though but can't say for sure.

I am constantly trying new settings every time I go, would probably find a lot more if I could just stick with something that (I knew worked, LOL)

What I do is get something deep and practice changing tone modes, responses, etc until you find one that you are confident is getting the job done.

Thanks for reminding me of what I used to do to eek our 1 or 2 more inches on the really deep stuff.

I will have to try the long when I can get out again in the spring, but on my E-Trac and the 3030 I always used the pitch hold myself as I could tell more if it seen a target as the reg sometimes was so fast and back to the normal threshold I misses so many signals. This long sound interesting and will have to give it a try.

Thanks for all the info
Rick

I have not tried pitch hold but plan to. Long is good for me in areas of little trash but after trying it I several nail/trash sites I cannot handle it. My hats off to anyone that can.

I tried it for a little while at the beach today and honestly it annoyed me. I guess it's just what your preference is.

I gave it a try today and for me, it just seemed to lock onto the good signals....good being a solid clean//smooth shaped piece of metal (coins, pull tabs and rings). Foil and canslaw seemed to sound off mid or high (5 tone combined) but was flute like. Iron hit low but gave a high tone on the edges when swinging the coil over. I did have one low and mid tone (both clean) but when pinpointing, could only find one target.... when dug up it was a jig head with some of the hook still on it.... thus the mid and low tone.
Falses were just that short sounding, anything with any substance to it, (even small splitshot) sounded off. I was able to run in Manual 29 and started picking up some real small targets today that I normally don't even hear but I also worked slower than I ever have on a beach.... kind of hard forcing myself to crawl again but it really worked today.

Did manage to get a small gold heart pendant working this way.

I tried the 'long' yesterday on a demo lot. Was 'different' for sure, tone seemed to hang there for a really long time, and I think I will have to give it another try on a park and not with a lot of trash. I'm so used to the 4 tones and backing it up with the stock 'coin' mode that I might need a bit of 'field time' to get used to it.

I remember when I was trying it for the first time,,,,, it did not "click" with me. I went back to the old ways but returned and tried it again a month or so later,,,,,, been stuck on it ever sense,,,
