I prefer Normal as well. Tried the others, but didn't like them.

I too don't care for the others. My opinion of the others is like this: The sovereign and the excaliber pre-dated the Explorer, in the Minelab lineup of products. As such, when the explorer came out, I think Minelab tried to give an option to mimic the long drawn out beeooonnnnngggs that are familiar to Sov. and Excal users. But for some reason, they just don't jive, and the tell-tale quicker explorer beeps are better. I never felt the long drawn out boonggggs of the other options did anything, but try to mimic the audio of the earlier minelabs. And it was never a good replication, in my opinion, as they are just simply two different machines.

I always have used Normal.....I've experimented only slightly with the others. They very well may have their advantages, but I just go with what is working for me....Probably should give them a fair evaluation sometime though.....

I used pitch hold for a very long time. There is some advantage to the changes in tones, but.... what i noticed was i was trying to listen to the threshold too much. I want to know when the threshold goes null, but not to the extent that i dont block it out along with those other tones. Some of the tones almost disappear..... its like taking a hearing test. Now when i hunted in the desert of woods those change come in handy and work for me. Long and smooth didnt work for me as well although some who hunt with it say it works great in trashy areas especially if they are using FAST recovery.

When it nulls its OK and when it gets interference its OK but in the areas when it nulls and gets interference that is nearly impossible to detect I think the pitch hold can grab on to solid stuff that might ordinarily be missed amongst the falsing in normal mode

With my bad hearing i find the pitch hold works the best for me. This way I can hear the tone change of the threshold when going over a good target where the normal was such a quick tone and back to normal threshold I sometime couldnt hear the deeper one. My deeper find increased increased when using the pitch hold as I knew the tone changed so I would check and see why and found deeper weaker targets this way.

I started w/ Normal when I got the machine but after some conversations with Rick(ND) I soon switched to Pitch Hold and that was over 2 years ago.
