Rest Area detecting question

Howdy ALL,,,, I went to a rest area near where I live yesterday & spent about 6 hours there pulling up about $1.00 in penny's, $1.00 in dimes & a couple of nickles. I had a great time but really needing to get my detector paid for so wanting to find those rings. I was finding a lot of older bottle caps all rusted up so sounding & hitting like it was something silver (bah). I have been trying to use both Conductive & ferrous to see if I can eliminate those worthless digs but still having troubles since I want to find those rings & I don't have any gold to test with In an area like that what setting do you tend to have it on?? I totally agree in test gardens but when you don't have those items to test with bah..... So that I can get the coins & gold whats the best settings to have up and running? I have Andy's book, have crossed saved so have coin in conductive & also in ferrous with 0-9, 14-16, 33-39 open with it on auto. Should I have anything else open? & I've been having sensitivity on auto, but with things not being deep should I change that??

The big thing is that you have to hunt where the desired targets are. At a Rest Stop, you probably aren't going to find much jewelry unless there is a play area, preferably for adults/teenagers.

For general public areas, I tend to have 13-15 open, but never dig 15 as it is ALWAYS a pulltab on my machine. Nickels are almost always 14, and are 13's when they aren't. Someone in this forum recommended 6-9 for small gold rings and I leave that open unless I am digging a lot of foil. Youre OK on the upper #s, tho I tend to screen out the lower 30s when I get tired of digging zincs.

As to test gardens, go to a coin store and buy some silver coin 'slicks' in a dime and quarter if you want to go that route. Personally, I wouldn't (even tho I did when i started with my Safari); silver ALWAYS comes in at 39 on my Safari and is a distinctive high flutey sound that you will know when you hear it. Dig all 39s.
If you have a friend with a wedding band, just sweep his/her hand. Do it for as many different ones as possible and you will start to see why we say gold comes in all over the chart. (rem that air does not equal dirt tho- this is just to get you started on gold)

But if you really want good jewelry to pay for your machine, you need to get to a water play spot. Then leave open all positive #s if you can.

fwiw, I hunt ferrous, auto sensitivity(I dig only with a trowel on public lands and am lazy anyway), hi trash in parks and such. On the beach, I hunt all positives, low trash, ferrous, and usually auto sensitivity- and I dig it all on the beach.
 
Yeah, its pretty normal for individual machines to vary slightly. I've even read credible reports of a machine varying a digit due to different soil conditions.
What, if anything, comes it at 39 for you, SS? 38's are almost always clad quarters for me.
 
For me, clad quarters are always dead on 38. I think they're the most consistent read of all coins that I've recovered. On Sunday, a nice '39 merc bounced between 38-39 in relic mode/low density, but that's common for me on silver.
 
I found a clad quarter at a solid 14 once. Nothing else anywhere near it either. Still cant explain that one. Tone was the quarter tone tho; that Safari music don't lie.
 
Allways hits on a 38. I did find a thin seated dime at six inches that bounced between 35-36

I don't know what state you live in, I live in Nj. Someone told me that they were stopped in a rest area off the Garden State Parkway for metal detecting. I never got the urge to go to one, but I would check it out if you live in NJ. Like I said, I got this information through word of mouth.
 
Jim, I never got the urge to hit our GSP rest stops. They don't seem to have nearly the size, privacy and potential as rest stops in many of the midlantic and southern states that I've passed through. Unfortunately, many of those out of state stops have some interesting historical markers,so md'ing may be off limits, unless one knew who to ask for permission ?
 
I have been hunting old abandon rest area's such as along old route 66 here in Illinois or state owned rest area's that are no longer maintain to save money some are quite overgrown.I have not found much silver past 1930 but I have found a lot of silver Washington quarters.I have also been told 2 times by state troopers to go ahead and finish hunting today but do not come back.
 
I live in Salina Kansas, went to a rest area just west of town of Solomon Kansas On I-70 hwy. There were a couple of workers there, so asked them if they knew of any problems with metal detecting there and they said "No, that they also clean & take care of other rest areas and have seen people detecting" . But I've been given permission before on places and then find out that I've asked the wrong person when I get kicked off the place.
 
I will be heading down to Virginia and will be staying at Montpelier, the one time residence of President James Madison and his wife Dolly. That should be a great week. I will be looking on stoping in a few other sites if I can get permission.If anyone from down that way has any ideas of where I might be able to stop on my way back, drop me a line.
